I’M NOT THE ONE LEAVING / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Deed Victoria Thought She Had Won

Claire recognized the case immediately.

Victoria carried it downstairs and placed it beside her chair at dinner.

Daniel saw it.

His fork stopped above his plate.

“Where did you get that?” he asked.

“The place Eleanor expected us to search.”

Claire kept her expression blank.

Victoria looked at her.

“You remember the old storage facility, don’t you?”

Claire lifted her water glass.

“I have no idea what you mean.”

Victoria smiled.

“The key disappeared from Evelyn Hart’s office seven years ago. Eleanor’s attorney was more careless than she realized.”

Evelyn had not lost the key.

Claire understood what Victoria was doing. She believed the case she possessed contained the valid deed. She wanted Claire to panic and reveal what she knew.

Daniel looked between them.

“Is that the original?”

“It is now.”

Victoria rested one hand on the case.

“With the divorce agreement signed, the property transfer will be simple.”

Claire set down her glass.

“The agreement says Daniel owns the house?”

“It says you surrender all marital claims.”

“The house isn’t a marital asset.”

“It will be after the ownership structure is corrected.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Mother, enough.”

Victoria ignored him.

She opened the case and removed the defective deed.

Claire recognized Eleanor’s signature and the incorrect survey coordinate.

Victoria had no idea it was bait.

“You stole that,” Claire said.

“I preserved it.”

“From a secure storage box.”

“Your grandmother stole far more from me.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What did Eleanor take?”

Victoria’s fingers tightened around the deed.

“An opportunity.”

“What opportunity?”

“A future your father deserved.”

Daniel leaned back.

“My father?”

Victoria had rarely spoken about him. Charles Mercer died when Daniel was ten, supposedly from a heart condition. Claire had seen only a few photographs.

Victoria closed the case.

“This conversation is over.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You told me the Bennett property blocked an old development project. You never said my father was involved.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Because the details were irrelevant.”

“They were relevant enough for you to arrange my marriage.”

Claire watched Daniel absorb the truth from a different direction.

He knew he had been used.

Until that moment, he had believed he was also a planner.

Now he was realizing he had been another piece on Victoria’s board.

Claire rose from the table.

“I’m going upstairs.”

Victoria looked at her untouched plate.

“You should eat. You will need strength for moving.”

Claire paused.

“So will you.”

Victoria laughed.

Daniel did not.

Upstairs, Claire messaged Evelyn.

Victoria has the defective deed. She believes it is real.

Evelyn responded moments later.

Good. Let her attempt to file it.

Claire then contacted Rosa.

Move the original mail and receipts tonight. Use the service entrance.

Rosa replied with a single word.

Done.

Claire placed her phone in the drawer.

A soft knock came at the bedroom door.

Daniel entered without waiting.

“My father knew your grandmother,” he said.

Claire remained near the dresser.

“So did your mother.”

“I found letters in Victoria’s room.”

“What letters?”

“Charles Mercer wrote to Eleanor four months before he died.”

Daniel handed Claire a yellowed envelope.

The letter inside was addressed to Eleanor.

You were right about Victoria. She will not stop until she finds the chamber. I moved the documents before she could reach them. Samuel helped me hide the entrance, but I no longer trust him.

Claire read the lines again.

“What chamber?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where did you find this?”

“In a false drawer beneath my mother’s jewelry.”

“Does she know you took it?”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the hall.

“She thinks my father died before he could tell anyone.”

Claire raised her eyes.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying his death may not have been natural.”

A floorboard creaked outside.

Daniel opened the door.

No one was there.

When he turned back, the letter was no longer in Claire’s hand.

The bedroom window stood open.

And on the balcony, a dark figure disappeared beyond the stone railing.
