I’M NOT THE ONE LEAVING / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Account in Claire’s Name

The Continental National account receiving the final $500,000 belonged to Claire Bennett.

Not Claire Mercer.

Not the Bennett Family Trust.

Claire Bennett.

The name she had used before her marriage.

The account had been opened nine years earlier, twelve months before she met Daniel.

“That is not my account,” Claire said.

Marcus nodded.

“We know.”

“The bank verified someone’s identity.”

“With your birth certificate, your former address, and a passport issued in your name.”

“I have never lost a passport.”

“The document number does not match the one you currently hold.”

Evelyn slid a copy across the table.

The photograph showed Claire.

At least, it appeared to.

The woman had the same eyes, the same jawline, and the same small mark near her left eyebrow.

But Claire had never taken that photograph.

“When was this issued?”

“Ten years ago,” Marcus said.

“My grandmother was still alive.”

“Yes.”

“Did she create it?”

“We don’t know.”

Claire looked at the metal box recovered from the eastern wall.

“Open it.”

Evelyn hesitated.

“The court has authorized biometric examination, but we should wait for the forensic team.”

“I have waited while everyone else made decisions about my identity.”

She placed her thumb on the fingerprint plate.

The device scanned once.

A green light appeared.

Identity confirmed.

The box opened with a soft mechanical click.

Inside were three items.

A set of bearer certificates sealed in protective sleeves.

A silver key marked with the letter E.

And a small video screen.

The screen activated automatically.

Eleanor Bennett appeared.

She was seated in the mansion library.

The recording had been made shortly before her death.

“Claire,” Eleanor said, “if the eastern box has opened for you, then Victoria has failed to take the house, but she has probably succeeded in revealing the account.”

Claire leaned closer.

Evelyn and Marcus remained silent.

“The account in your name was created to receive money stolen from the Bennett holdings. It was never intended for your use. It was designed so that one day, investigators would believe you had participated in the theft.”

Claire looked at Marcus.

“Someone planned to frame me before I met Daniel.”

Eleanor continued.

“Victoria did not create the account. Samuel did.”

Every person in the room turned toward the door.

Samuel Vale had not attended the meeting.

Evelyn immediately called building security.

Eleanor’s image remained on the screen.

“Samuel believed the bearer certificates belonged to him because his family once controlled the companies from which they came. He helped Charles hide the chamber, but he also created a second entrance.”

Claire picked up the silver key.

The letter E might mean east.

Or Eleanor.

“Do not trust Samuel’s story about Charles’s death,” Eleanor said. “He arrived at the garden before the ambulance. Victoria waited eleven minutes, but Samuel waited twenty-seven years to admit what he removed from Charles’s hand.”

The video flickered.

For several seconds, the picture disappeared.

When it returned, Eleanor was holding a photograph.

It showed two infant girls wrapped in identical blankets.

Claire stopped breathing.

One child wore a bracelet marked C.

The other wore a bracelet marked E.

Eleanor’s voice softened.

“There is one truth I hoped you would never need to carry. The account could be opened in your name because your identity was never yours alone.”

The screen suddenly went dark.

“That cannot be the end,” Claire said.

Marcus examined the device.

“The file has been interrupted.”

“Can you restore it?”

“Possibly.”

Evelyn picked up the photograph of the infants.

“Claire, did your parents ever mention another child?”

“My mother died when I was young. My father said I was their only daughter.”

“Where is your father?”

“He disappeared when I was twelve.”

The office lights went out.

Emergency lighting filled the room with a dim red glow.

Marcus moved toward the door.

It would not open.

Someone had locked the conference room remotely.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared from the disconnected number that had first warned her about the deed.

Samuel Vale is inside the mansion.

Do not let him reach the east entrance.

A second message arrived.

The woman using your identity is already with him.

Claire looked at the infant photograph.

The girl marked E had a tiny birthmark near her left eyebrow.

The same mark Claire saw every morning in the mirror.

The conference room screen came alive.

Security footage from the mansion filled it.

A woman stood inside the eastern garden.

She had Claire’s face.

Beside her, Samuel Vale inserted a silver key into the stone wall.

The woman looked directly into the security camera.

Then she spoke.

There was no sound, but Claire could read the words on her lips.

You took my name.

May you like

The stone wall began to open.

And before Claire could learn what waited behind it, every camera in the mansion went black.
