Chapter 7 - The Assistant Daniel Paid to Disappear

Lila Grant chose a small train station café two hours outside the city.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Lila had cut her dark hair short and replaced her designer office clothes with jeans and a plain sweater. She sat where she could see both exits.
“You came alone?” Lila asked.
“Yes.”
“No lawyer?”
“She’s nearby, but she won’t enter unless you ask.”
Lila studied Claire for several seconds.
“I thought you knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That your marriage was part of the Harbor plan.”
Claire placed her phone facedown on the table.
“Tell me everything.”
Lila wrapped both hands around her coffee.
“Three years ago, Daniel asked me to organize old Mercer Development files. I found correspondence between Victoria and a man named Samuel Vale. The letters went back more than thirty years.”
Claire remembered the investigator’s name from Eleanor’s storage box.
“What did they say?”
“Victoria wanted access to land owned by your grandmother. Samuel said the eastern parcel had value that could not appear in public records.”
“What kind of value?”
“I never found out.”
“Did Daniel know about the letters?”
“I showed him.”
Lila looked toward the window.
“He told me to forget them. A month later, he asked me to create a timeline of your relationship. Where you met. When he proposed. When the trust transferred the mansion. He wanted it to look natural if anyone investigated.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“So our meeting was arranged.”
“Victoria knew you would attend that museum fundraiser. She placed Daniel on the sponsorship committee.”
The answer hurt more than Claire expected.
Even after everything she had discovered, some part of her still wanted the beginning to have been real.
“Did he ever love me?”
Lila’s expression softened.
“I don’t know. Sometimes I thought he did. That may have made him more dangerous, not less.”
“What do you mean?”
“He convinced himself that taking control of your property was protecting the marriage. Every time Victoria demanded more, he told himself he could repair the damage later.”
Lila opened her bag and removed a small drive.
“This contains emails, draft agreements, and recordings from Daniel’s office.”
“Why did you take them?”
“Because he asked me to arrange a doctor’s report saying you were unable to manage your finances.”
Claire felt the anger rise, but she kept her face calm.
“What happened when you refused?”
“He threatened me. I threatened to expose him. Then he paid me.”
“With money from the forged loan.”
“I didn’t know where it came from until last week.”
“Why speak now?”
“Because someone broke into my apartment.”
Lila pushed back her sleeve.
There was a faint bruise near her wrist.
“They didn’t steal money or electronics. They took only one folder.”
“What was in it?”
“Copies of the Samuel Vale letters.”
“Do you still have the recordings?”
“Some of them.”
“Who broke in?”
“I don’t know, but it was not Daniel.”
“How can you be certain?”
“Because Daniel called me afterward.”
Lila unlocked her phone and played a voicemail.
Daniel’s voice filled the small space.
Lila, whatever you found, my mother has lost control of this. Do not contact Claire. Do not contact anyone. Leave the city again.
The recording ended.
Claire stared at the phone.
“He sounded afraid,” she said.
“He was.”
“Of Victoria?”
Lila shook her head.
“Of the person Victoria owes.”
Claire thought about the scratched-out man in the photograph.
“Samuel Vale?”
“Vale disappeared twenty-seven years ago.”
“Disappeared?”
“His car was found near a lake. No body was recovered.”
Lila slid the drive across the table.
“The last recording is from three weeks ago. Daniel and Victoria were arguing in his office.”
Claire connected the drive to her laptop and opened the audio file.
Victoria’s voice came first.
“You said the loan would be enough.”
Daniel answered, “It would have been if you had not sent half a million dollars to him.”
“You don’t understand what happens if I stop paying.”
“I am not destroying Claire to protect your secret.”
“You married her to protect my secret.”
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel said, “That was before I knew who was really behind the account.”
Claire paused the recording.
“Who was behind it?”
Lila shook her head.
“The file ends thirty seconds later. But listen to the final part.”
Claire pressed play.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“If Claire discovers the name on the original transfer, she will know her grandmother lied to her.”
Victoria responded in a whisper.
“Then make sure she signs the divorce papers before Friday.”
May you like
Claire closed the laptop.
Friday was three days away.
