I’M NOT THE ONE LEAVING / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - Claire’s Countermove

Evelyn wanted Claire to leave the mansion immediately.

“We have enough evidence to request an emergency injunction,” she said. “You do not need to remain in that house.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No legal strategy requires you to sleep under the same roof as two people committing fraud against you.”

“This isn’t only legal.”

Claire stood at the conference room window, watching traffic move below.

“If I leave now, Victoria will destroy whatever remains in Daniel’s office. She will remove the deed, the mail, and anything connected to the eastern parcel.”

“Rosa can preserve documents.”

“Rosa is already at risk.”

Marcus Lee closed his laptop.

“Claire is right about one thing. The financial trail is incomplete. The $500,000 transfer passed through a bank that will not release ownership records without formal proceedings.”

“How long?” Claire asked.

“Several weeks.”

“We don’t have several weeks.”

Evelyn tapped the separation agreement.

“Daniel expects you to sign Friday. We can use that.”

Claire turned.

“How?”

“Sign the divorce filing, but not the property settlement he prepared.”

“He may notice.”

“Not if we replace the final pages.”

Evelyn explained the plan.

Daniel’s documents combined a standard divorce petition with a separate marital settlement agreement. He expected Claire to sign both at home, without independent counsel.

Evelyn would prepare a lawful divorce petition preserving all of Claire’s claims and ownership rights.

Claire could sign that document in front of Daniel.

He would believe she had surrendered.

Meanwhile, Evelyn would file an ownership declaration and obtain eviction notices based on the real deed.

Marcus would coordinate with Hawthorne Private Lending and county investigators. If Daniel attempted to transfer the mansion after receiving the signed divorce petition, it would strengthen the fraud case.

“You want him to make the final move,” Claire said.

“I want him to reveal his intent.”

Claire thought of Daniel’s confidence, Victoria’s smile, and the way they had moved her grandmother’s chairs without permission.

“They will.”

That evening, Claire returned to the mansion carrying shopping bags to make the day appear ordinary.

Daniel was waiting in the bedroom.

He stood near the window with his hands in his pockets.

“You met Lila.”

Claire placed the bags on the bed.

“Who?”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend you don’t understand.”

His anger looked different from Victoria’s. Victoria enjoyed control. Daniel feared losing it.

“Were you following me?” Claire asked.

“I was protecting you.”

“From your former assistant?”

“Lila is unstable.”

Claire almost laughed.

The same word again.

Anyone who challenged the Mercers became unstable.

“What did she tell you?” Daniel asked.

“That depends on what you’re afraid she knows.”

He stepped closer.

“Claire, there are things about my mother’s past that have nothing to do with us.”

“Then why did you marry me?”

Daniel stopped.

The silence answered before he did.

Claire’s chest tightened, but she refused to look away.

“Did she send you to that fundraiser?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Did she?”

“Yes.”

The word entered the room softly.

Claire had expected it.

It still felt like glass under her ribs.

Daniel moved toward her.

“I knew who you were before we met. My mother wanted an introduction. That is all.”

“You proposed after five months.”

“Because I loved you.”

“Did you?”

“I still do.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then why is there an $880,000 loan against my house?”

All color left his face.

For one second, Daniel looked younger, almost lost.

Then the mask returned.

“What loan?”

“The one with my forged signature.”

He turned away.

That small movement told Claire everything.

“You knew.”

“I knew there was financing.”

“You knew my signature was forged.”

“My mother said you had authorized it.”

“And you believed her?”

“She showed me a power of attorney.”

“I never signed one.”

Daniel ran a hand over his face.

“You don’t understand how much is at stake.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can’t.”

“You mean you won’t.”

“If the Harbor Ridge project fails, hundreds of people lose their jobs.”

“And if it succeeds, you take land my grandmother protected.”

“It is unused land.”

“Then why has your family wanted it for thirty years?”

Daniel’s eyes shifted toward the east wall.

Claire noticed.

“What is beneath it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I swear to you, I don’t know.”

For the first time, she believed him.

He truly did not know.

That frightened her more.

Daniel took another step.

“Sign the papers Friday. Keep whatever cash you have. Leave the rest alone.”

“My house?”

He lowered his voice.

“Especially the house.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother is not the person you should be afraid of.”

A door opened in the hallway.

Daniel immediately stopped speaking.

Victoria stood outside the bedroom.

She smiled at Claire.

May you like

“Dinner is ready.”

Behind her back, she held the black document case from Eleanor’s storage box.
