Chapter 9 - Ashes and Ownership
By the time Mariana returned, emergency crews surrounded the estate.
Rain fell heavily, but fire had consumed much of the eastern wing and reached the roof above the ballroom.
Guests stood beneath temporary shelters along the drive. Several were wrapped in blankets. Uniformed guards moved through the crowd.
Mariana left the SUV before it stopped completely.
“Where is Andrew?”
Luca caught up with her.
“We do not know.”
“What about Brenda?”
“Also missing.”
“Security footage?”
“Erased thirty seconds before the explosion.”
Mariana looked toward the burning windows.
The eastern wing contained the tunnel entrance, the hidden staircase, and the original library records.
The fire had not been intended to destroy the mansion.
It had been intended to destroy evidence.
A firefighter approached.
“Ma’am, you cannot enter.”
“My husband may be inside.”
“Teams are searching.”
A guard ran toward Luca.
“We found someone near the carriage house.”
Mariana followed them beyond the main driveway.
Andrew lay beneath the covered entrance of the old carriage house, conscious but disoriented. His tuxedo jacket was torn, and soot marked one side of his face.
He tried to stand when he saw Mariana.
“She took the red folder.”
“Brenda?”
“Yes.”
“Where did she go?”
“The tunnel. A vehicle was waiting.”
“Why were you here?”
“I followed her after the accounts froze.”
“You were supposed to contact Luca.”
“I thought she would lead me to Elena.”
Mariana looked at the open carriage-house cabinet.
The passports were gone.
So was the medical file.
“Did she say anything?”
Andrew reached inside his shirt and removed a small silver device.
“She dropped this.”
It was an audio recorder.
Mariana pressed play.
Brenda’s voice sounded through the speaker.
Marcus has the founder claim. Mariana has the private trust. We need both before sunrise.
A man answered.
Bring Andrew. The marriage remains useful.
Andrew looked at Mariana.
“She intended to take me.”
“Why?”
“To force you to transfer the private trust.”
“And Elena?”
“She said Elena would be moved to Site Twelve.”
Mariana turned to Luca.
“Search the Northgate properties for that designation.”
“We already started.”
A second recording played automatically.
This voice belonged to Samuel.
Brenda, do not involve Mariana. Marcus promised she would be protected.
Brenda replied.
Marcus promised many things before he died.
Mariana stopped the audio.
Andrew stared at her.
“She said before he died.”
“Which means she knows the man in Zurich is not my father.”
“Or Marcus died after Zurich.”
Mariana looked toward the burning mansion.
The emergency founder claim had been activated under Marcus Vale’s identity. If the person behind it was an impostor, the claim could be reversed.
But proof would take time.
The hidden controller now possessed partial authority over Vale Meridian Holdings.
Brenda had the red folder, but the documents inside were only copies. The real private trust required Mariana’s living biometric authorization.
The principal assets were still safe.
For the moment.
Her phone rang.
Sofia.
“The account freeze succeeded,” Sofia said. “All eleven destination accounts are locked.”
“Even M. Vale?”
“Yes, but it was emptied seconds before the order.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred million.”
Andrew heard the figure.
“Where did it go?” Mariana asked.
“We cannot trace the final destination. The funds moved through a settlement network tied to sovereign accounts.”
“What about Blackwood International?”
“The private trust has asserted control. The directors are receiving notices now.”
“Remove Andrew as chairman.”
He looked at her sharply.
Sofia paused.
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
“Mariana,” Andrew said.
She kept the phone to her ear.
“Remove Brenda from every position and issue a public statement. Employee salaries remain protected. All executive bonuses are suspended. Begin creditor review.”
“And the mansion?” Sofia asked.
“Terminate Andrew’s residential authorization.”
Andrew took a step toward her.
“You are evicting me tonight?”
Mariana ended the call.
“You used my trust to build a trap around me.”
“I helped you expose them.”
“After helping them for five years.”
“I can still help find Elena.”
“You can do that without controlling my company, my home, or my life.”
The fire reflected in his eyes.
“What happens to us?”
Mariana looked at the man she had loved, the man who had betrayed her, and the man who might still hold part of the truth.
“There is no us.”
The words hurt her.
That did not make them less necessary.
Andrew lowered his gaze.
“I deserve that.”
“Yes.”
“Are you going to have me arrested?”
“Not tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because I need the names of everyone who helped you.”
“And after I give them to you?”
“You answer for your choices.”
He nodded slowly.
For once, he did not argue.
By sunrise, the fire was controlled.
The eastern wing was destroyed, but the main structure remained standing.
News reports spread across the country.
Blackwood International had changed ownership overnight.
Andrew Blackwood had been removed as chairman.
Brenda Sinclair was wanted for questioning in an international fraud investigation.
Vale Meridian Holdings had lost temporary control of several assets, but the private trust had secured the company’s operations.
At nine in the morning, Mariana entered the headquarters lobby.
Employees lined the walls, uncertain whether they still had jobs.
She addressed them without cameras.
“No employee will lose wages because of decisions made by executives. Existing contracts will be honored. The company will continue operating under independent oversight.”
A warehouse supervisor raised his hand.
“Who owns the company now?”
Mariana looked at the hundreds of people waiting for an answer.
“I do.”
There were no cheers at first.
Only silence.
Then an older employee near the elevators began to clap.
Others joined.
Within seconds, the lobby filled with sound.
Mariana did not smile until she saw Sofia standing near the back.
The main battle was over.
Andrew’s public empire no longer existed.
Brenda’s accounts were frozen.
The board members who supported the false incapacity claim resigned before noon.
Mariana established a compensation fund for employees whose pensions had been used as collateral without their knowledge.
The satisfaction was not revenge.
It was restoration.
At 11:47, Luca entered Mariana’s temporary office.
“We found Site Twelve.”
“Where?”
“Beneath a private medical facility outside Vienna.”
“Is Elena there?”
“The facility was cleared six hours ago.”
Mariana’s hope tightened into anger.
“Did they leave anything?”
“One patient record.”
He placed a folder on her desk.
Mariana opened it.
The file contained Elena Vale’s medical history, photographs, and genetic test results.
Mariana read the final page.
Then she read it again.
The woman identified as Elena Vale shared no biological relationship with Mariana.
At the bottom, someone had written a note by hand.
May you like
Elena was never your mother.
Ask Samuel who you really are.
