Chapter 4 - The Name That Should Not Exist
Mariana spent the night inside the hidden room beneath the mansion library.
Her father had built it long before Andrew entered her life. It contained paper records that had never been digitized, private correspondence, and financial ledgers written in a code only the Vale family used.
At three in the morning, she found the first reference to the Aurelian Circle.
The organization had begun as an alliance among shipping families, private banks, and industrial investors. Officially, it no longer existed.
Unofficially, it controlled access to accounts large enough to influence governments.
Mariana’s father, Marcus Vale, had broken with the Circle shortly before his death.
The public report said he drowned after his car left a mountain road during a storm. His body was never recovered.
Mariana had accepted the conclusion because Samuel identified the personal effects found inside the vehicle.
Now she wondered whether Samuel had been protecting her from the truth.
A ledger entry dated six weeks before the crash contained a warning.
If the Circle approaches Mariana, activate the Winter Rose Protocol.
Mariana read the line twice.
Samuel had used the phrase winter roses during their compromised phone call.
He had not merely warned her that he was being watched.
He had instructed her to activate a protocol.
She searched the shelves until she found a black box without a lock. The brass key fit a narrow opening beneath it.
Inside was a cassette recorder, an old photograph, and a handwritten letter.
The photograph showed her father standing beside Samuel and a third man whose face had been scratched away.
The letter was addressed to Mariana.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, someone has used my name to gain access to the trust.
Do not assume I am alive.
Do not assume I am dead.
Trust only the person who knows why the eastern staircase has thirteen steps.
Mariana immediately counted them in her memory.
The eastern staircase had fourteen visible steps.
But one was a false panel concealing an old service passage.
Thirteen functional steps.
Only four people knew that.
Her father.
Mariana.
Samuel.
And Andrew.
Mariana froze.
She had shown Andrew the hidden passage during their first year of marriage. It had seemed harmless then, a childhood secret shared with the man she loved.
Had he remembered?
Her phone vibrated.
Sofia had located a property owned by Northgate Protection near the abandoned Vale river warehouses.
Thermal imaging suggested two people were inside.
Mariana contacted Luca Moretti, the head of the security team still loyal to Vale Meridian Holdings.
“Prepare a recovery unit.”
“Police?”
“Not yet.”
“If Samuel is being held, we should involve them.”
“If Northgate has connections inside law enforcement, warning them could move him.”
“When do you want us there?”
“Before sunrise.”
Luca hesitated.
“You are not coming.”
“That was not a question.”
“Mariana.”
“Samuel may be the only person who knows who authorized the false marriage amendment.”
“And if this is a trap?”
“Then I need to see who set it.”
The river warehouse stood beneath an abandoned rail bridge, its windows dark and its loading bays chained.
Mariana arrived in an unmarked vehicle with Luca and four investigators.
Rain struck the metal roof.
They entered through a side door that showed signs of recent use.
Inside, the building appeared empty.
A light glowed beneath an office door on the upper level.
Luca signaled for Mariana to remain behind.
She ignored him.
They climbed the stairs.
The office contained a chair, a camera, and several screens displaying live views of Blackwood mansion.
Samuel was not there.
One screen showed Andrew asleep in the master bedroom.
Another showed Brenda entering the mansion’s east wing.
A third showed Mariana’s hidden library room.
Someone had been watching her only hours earlier.
Luca inspected the equipment.
“This system is not Northgate standard.”
“Who built it?”
“I cannot tell yet.”
Mariana noticed an audio waveform moving across one monitor.
A live microphone.
She leaned closer.
Voices came through the speakers.
Andrew and Brenda.
They were speaking inside the east wing.
“We should move Hale tonight,” Andrew said.
“The vote is in three days,” Brenda replied. “Moving him creates risk.”
“He knows Mariana found the contract.”
“She found what we wanted her to find.”
Mariana felt the room become colder.
Andrew continued.
“She is following the trail exactly as planned.”
“And when she reaches the registry?”
“She will activate the Winter Rose Protocol.”
Brenda’s voice lowered.
“Are you certain that is what he wants?”
Andrew laughed softly.
“He has waited eleven years for his daughter to open that box.”
The transmission ended.
Mariana stared at the silent screen.
Luca looked at her.
“Who is he?”
Before Mariana could answer, every monitor turned black.
Then white letters appeared across the center screen.
HELLO, MARIANA.
A live video opened.
Samuel Hale sat in a dim room, his face tired but uninjured.
Behind him stood a man in shadow.
Samuel looked directly into the camera.
“Do not activate the protocol,” he said. “Your father designed it to destroy everything connected to the Vale name.”
The shadowed man placed a hand on Samuel’s shoulder.
May you like
Then he stepped into the light.
He had Marcus Vale’s eyes.
