Chapter 6 - The Price of Loyalty

Mariana took photographs of every passport and document before leaving the carriage house.

She removed nothing.

If Brenda discovered the cabinet had been disturbed, the entire operation might disappear before Mariana found Samuel or Elena.

Back inside the mansion, Andrew was waiting in the breakfast room.

He wore a navy suit and an expression of practiced concern.

“Where were you?”

“Walking.”

“In the rain?”

“I needed air.”

He looked at the damp edge of her coat.

“Brenda said you confronted her yesterday.”

“I asked her a question.”

“She feels threatened.”

“Does she?”

Andrew moved closer.

“This hostility has to stop.”

“Then tell your employee to stop entering restricted areas of my home.”

“Our home.”

Mariana looked at him.

“Is that what you tell her?”

Andrew’s face changed.

“Tell whom?”

“You answered very quickly.”

He lowered his voice.

“If you are suggesting something inappropriate, say it directly.”

“Are you sleeping with Brenda?”

The silence between them seemed to fill the room.

Andrew laughed once.

“You need help.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only answer this accusation deserves.”

Mariana set her handbag on a chair.

“I saw the hotel photographs.”

Andrew did not ask which photographs.

Another mistake.

He walked toward the window and turned his back.

“Brenda and I have traveled for business.”

“For five years?”

He turned.

“You have been investigating me.”

“You have been forging my signature.”

His concern disappeared.

For one second, Mariana saw the real expression beneath it.

Fear.

Then anger covered it.

“You have no idea what you are interfering with.”

“Explain it.”

“I am trying to protect what we built.”

“By declaring me incapable?”

“By preventing your family’s secrets from destroying us.”

Mariana’s pulse remained steady.

“What secrets?”

Andrew’s eyes moved toward the door.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because this house is monitored.”

Mariana said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“I know you think Brenda and I are working against you.”

“Aren’t you?”

“Brenda is working for the people who control the Aurelian registry.”

“And you?”

“I am trying to stay alive.”

The answer surprised her.

Andrew’s voice dropped further.

“Five years ago, Samuel came to me. He said your father’s enemies had found you.”

“Samuel met with you without telling me?”

“He said telling you would activate protections he could not control.”

“The Winter Rose Protocol.”

Andrew stared at her.

“You opened the box.”

“Yes.”

“Then we are running out of time.”

“Where is Samuel?”

“I do not know.”

“I heard you discussing where to move him.”

Andrew’s expression shifted again.

“You heard a recording.”

“A live transmission.”

“No, Mariana. You heard what they wanted you to hear.”

He removed his phone and opened an encrypted message.

The screen displayed a video of Samuel entering the east wing voluntarily. Brenda walked behind him, but Andrew was nowhere visible.

Another clip showed Samuel leaving through the tunnel.

“He was never held in this mansion,” Andrew said.

“His glasses were broken.”

“Placed there.”

“The medical file for my mother?”

Andrew became silent.

“You know about it,” Mariana said.

“I know Elena may have survived.”

“May have?”

“No one has allowed me to see her.”

“Who is no one?”

“The man using your father’s identity.”

Mariana searched his face for deception.

There was plenty.

But not all of it.

Some of his fear was real.

“Why forge the marriage amendment?” she asked.

“To force the trust into review.”

“That would transfer my authority.”

“For seventy-two hours.”

“To you.”

“Because the Circle cannot access the accounts through me. I am not Vale blood.”

“You expect me to believe you were protecting my assets by stealing them?”

“I needed the board to remove you long enough to expose the hidden controller.”

“And Brenda helped you?”

Andrew looked toward the door again.

“Brenda believes I am working for her.”

“Are you sleeping with her?”

He did not answer.

Mariana’s disappointment was quieter than anger.

“That part was not an act,” she said.

Andrew lowered his eyes.

“I needed her trust.”

“You could have told me.”

“Samuel said you would activate Winter Rose if you knew.”

“You chose Samuel over your wife.”

“I chose survival.”

“Yours.”

“Ours.”

Mariana moved toward the door.

Andrew caught her wrist, not violently, but firmly enough to stop her.

“Friday’s vote must happen.”

She looked at his hand until he released her.

“If the board removes you,” he continued, “the hidden controller will attempt the transfer. That is when we identify him.”

“And if the transfer succeeds?”

“It cannot. Samuel designed a secondary lock.”

“Samuel is missing.”

“I know.”

“Then your plan has already failed.”

Andrew’s phone rang.

The screen displayed Brenda’s name.

He rejected the call.

Immediately, Mariana’s encrypted phone vibrated inside her handbag.

A message from Sofia appeared.

We found Samuel.

He walked into the Zurich consulate twelve minutes ago.

Mariana opened the attached security image.

Samuel stood at a service counter.

Beside him was the gray-haired man from the warehouse video.

The man’s face was fully visible.

Facial recognition returned a match.

MARCUS VALE.

CONFIDENCE: 99.7 PERCENT.

Andrew looked over her shoulder.

All color left his face.

“That is impossible.”

Mariana studied him.

“You are afraid.”

“You should be too.”

A second image arrived.

Marcus Vale had presented a document requesting emergency control over Vale Meridian Holdings.

The basis of his claim was simple.

He was alive.

As the original founder, he intended to reclaim everything.
