Chapter 8 - The Night of the Gala

Andrew was not taken to prison.

Not immediately.

The officers escorted him to a private interview room, where Samuel presented evidence linking his signatures to international transfers, false medical records, and obstruction of a financial investigation.

Andrew insisted the transfers had been part of an undercover effort.

Samuel insisted no authorized investigation existed.

Mariana watched from behind one-way glass.

“Who is telling the truth?” Sofia asked.

“Neither of them.”

“How can you be certain?”

“Samuel entered with federal officers minutes after Marcus seized the trust. The timing was arranged.”

“Then Samuel is working with Marcus.”

“Perhaps.”

“And Andrew?”

Mariana watched her husband strike the interview table with the flat of his hand.

“Andrew is working for himself.”

She left the observation area and entered the room.

The officers looked toward Samuel.

Samuel gave a reluctant nod.

Mariana sat opposite Andrew.

“What happened to my mother’s medical records?”

Andrew looked exhausted.

“Samuel changed them.”

“Why?”

“To hide her transfer.”

“Transfer where?”

“I do not know.”

“You have said that too many times.”

“Because they never trusted me with the complete plan.”

“But they trusted you enough to betray me.”

His eyes hardened.

“I did what I had to do.”

“You drugged me.”

“I did not know Brenda had altered the water.”

“You used my fingerprint afterward.”

“I needed the amendment approved.”

“You had choices.”

“No, Mariana. I had instructions and consequences.”

“What consequences?”

Andrew looked toward Samuel.

“If I speak, she dies.”

“Who?”

“Elena.”

Mariana’s expression did not change, but Sofia saw her hand close beneath the table.

“Is she my mother?”

Andrew looked away.

“I do not know.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“That is enough.”

Mariana turned.

“Why?”

“Because he is manipulating you.”

“So are you.”

Samuel’s face reflected genuine pain.

“I tried to protect you.”

“By helping my father take control of the trust?”

“Marcus did not take control.”

“The notice carries his name.”

“The person using his identity took control.”

“You stood beside him in Zurich.”

“I was confirming whether he was real.”

“And?”

Samuel hesitated.

“I could not determine it.”

Mariana stood.

“Then the arrest ends here.”

Samuel looked toward the officers.

“You cannot interfere with a federal investigation.”

“I am not interfering. I am informing you that every piece of evidence against Andrew came through systems compromised by Northgate Protection.”

Andrew stared at her.

“You are helping me?”

“No,” Mariana replied. “I am refusing to help them.”

She left the room.

Within an hour, Andrew was released under restricted travel conditions. Brenda disappeared from the building before investigators reached the lobby. Someone had issued her an emergency diplomatic credential under the name Elena Mercer.

That evening, Mariana returned to the mansion.

She found Andrew in the library, holding the old photograph of Marcus and Samuel.

“We need to leave,” he said.

“Leaving gives Marcus the company.”

“He already has it.”

“Only on paper.”

Andrew studied her.

“What are you planning?”

“A reversal.”

“Your authority is suspended.”

“Vale Meridian’s authority is suspended. Not mine.”

He frowned.

Mariana opened the hidden safe and removed a red folder.

“My father did not place every asset inside Meridian.”

“What is that?”

“The original ownership agreement for Blackwood International.”

Andrew reached for it.

Mariana pulled it away.

“Eleven years ago, Vale Meridian financed the company through a temporary holding structure. When my father disappeared, the controlling shares transferred to a private trust.”

“Meridian.”

“No.”

Andrew’s eyes widened.

“Who controls the private trust?”

“I do.”

“You told me Meridian owned the company.”

“I told the public Meridian financed it.”

“And the mansion?”

“The same trust.”

Andrew sank into a chair.

“If you control Blackwood International, why did you let the board vote happen?”

“To expose the transfer network.”

“You could have stopped me months ago.”

“I needed to know how far you would go.”

His face tightened.

“You tested me.”

“You betrayed me.”

“I was trying to find Elena.”

“You were sleeping with Brenda.”

“That was part of maintaining access.”

“No,” Mariana said. “That was a decision you made because you believed I would never discover it.”

Andrew had no answer.

Mariana closed the folder.

“The trust can reclaim every Blackwood asset at midnight tomorrow.”

“What happens to the employees?”

“They remain paid.”

“The investors?”

“Protected.”

“And me?”

“That depends on what you do next.”

He looked at her.

“What do you need?”

“Brenda believes she escaped with access to Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“She also believes we are divided.”

“We are.”

“Then we will use the truth.”

Andrew gave a humorless laugh.

“You want me to publicly humiliate you.”

“I want Brenda to believe you have fully chosen her.”

“She already does.”

“Not enough to reveal where Elena is being held.”

“And how do we force that?”

Mariana walked toward the ballroom doors.

“Tomorrow night is the foundation gala. Every director, donor, banker, and journalist will be here.”

“You want an audience.”

“I want witnesses.”

“To what?”

“To the end of our marriage.”

Andrew looked at her for a long time.

“You planned the gala before any of this.”

“I planned the stage.”

“And the slap?”

“It must look real.”

His expression changed.

“I will not strike you.”

“You will not touch me. Camera angle and timing.”

“And Brenda?”

“She will believe she has won.”

“What happens after you leave?”

Mariana looked back at him.

“At midnight, I freeze every account connected to the transfer network.”

“That includes mine.”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to agree?”

“No. I expect you to understand that your agreement is no longer required.”

The following night, the mansion filled with music, photographers, and guests.

Brenda arrived in a champagne-gold gown, confident that Andrew had invited her to take Mariana’s place.

Andrew played his role perfectly.

He criticized Mariana loudly.

He stood beside Brenda.

He allowed whispers about Mariana’s instability to spread through the foyer.

Then, beneath the chandelier, he raised his hand.

Mariana turned at the correct moment.

The sound came from Andrew striking his own palm.

The guests saw what they expected to see.

Mariana delivered the line she had chosen.

“Tomorrow morning, everyone in this house will be asking for my forgiveness.”

She walked into the rain.

Inside the SUV, she authorized the freeze.

The order spread across eleven countries in less than forty seconds.

Corporate cards failed.

Private accounts locked.

Offshore transfers stopped.

Access to the mansion’s security system changed.

Brenda’s hidden diplomatic identity was flagged.

For the first time in months, Mariana felt the plan moving under her control.

Then the message from Account M. Vale appeared.

DO NOT RETURN TO THE MANSION.

THE REAL BETRAYAL HAS NOT BEGUN YET.

Mariana called Luca.

“Stop the vehicle.”

“Is something wrong?”

“Andrew is still inside.”

“He agreed to remain until Brenda revealed her extraction contact.”

Mariana looked back through the rain.

The mansion was already several streets behind them.

“Turn around.”

May you like

Before Luca could respond, an orange glow rose above the trees.

The eastern wing of the mansion exploded into flames.
