Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind Vanessa
The investigation uncovered more than Daniel expected.
Vanessa had used a false surname before meeting him. She had been connected to two previous wealthy partners, both older than Daniel. In each relationship, she had attempted to gain control of property through medical claims, forged documents, or manipulated power-of-attorney agreements.
Neither case had resulted in a conviction.
The victims had been too embarrassed to testify.
Eleanor was not embarrassed.
She gave a clear statement to investigators and provided the recordings. An independent physician confirmed she was mentally competent and had never shown signs of cognitive decline.
The consultant Vanessa hired admitted he had never examined Eleanor. He had created a preliminary report using information Vanessa supplied.
Police also found copies of trust documents in Vanessa’s private desk, along with messages to a financial adviser.
One message read:
Daniel is easy. The mother is the problem.
Daniel read those words several times.
He remembered every occasion when his mother tried to warn him.
Guilt followed him through the empty rooms of the villa.
Vanessa was released pending further proceedings but prohibited from contacting Eleanor or returning to the property.
She sent Daniel dozens of messages.
I made a mistake.
Your mother manipulated the recording.
We can fix this.
Daniel did not answer.
Instead, he met Samuel in the library.
“I failed her,” Daniel said.
Samuel closed the folder in front of him.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked up, surprised by the directness.
Samuel continued.
“But guilt is useful only when it changes what you do next.”
“What should I do?”
“Stop asking what will make you feel forgiven. Ask what will make your mother feel safe.”
Daniel found Eleanor in the rose garden wearing a silk scarf over her uneven hair.
He knelt beside her wheelchair.
“I’m sorry.”
Eleanor looked toward the white roses.
“I know.”

“That isn’t enough.”
“No,” she said. “It isn’t.”
