Chapter 2 - A House Divided
Vanessa began with small changes.
She moved Eleanor’s favorite chair away from the library window because it did not match the new furniture. She replaced the family photographs in the hallway with abstract paintings. She instructed the kitchen staff to stop preparing Eleanor’s usual breakfast, claiming the doctor had recommended a stricter diet.
No doctor had said such a thing.
Whenever Eleanor protested, Vanessa acted wounded.
“I’m only trying to help you.”
Then Daniel would return home, tired from work, and find Vanessa sitting beside his mother with a cup of tea.
“Your mother had another difficult day,” Vanessa would say.
Eleanor tried to explain, but Vanessa always spoke first.
“She becomes confused when she’s tired.”
Daniel began watching his mother with concern.
Eleanor saw the doubt entering his eyes.
That hurt more than Vanessa’s insults.
One afternoon, Vanessa dismissed Margaret, the housekeeper who had worked for the family for twenty years.
“She stole a bracelet,” Vanessa told Daniel.
Margaret denied it, but the missing bracelet appeared inside her cleaning bag.
Eleanor knew it had been planted.
Daniel did not.
He apologized to Margaret and paid her generously, but he allowed Vanessa to replace the entire household staff with people she had selected.
After that, Eleanor was alone.
Her new caregiver, Lila, seemed nervous around Vanessa. She rarely spoke unless spoken to and never entered a room without knocking.
One evening, Eleanor asked Lila for her mobile phone.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway before Lila could answer.
“Your phone is being repaired.”
“There was nothing wrong with it.”
“You dropped it.”
“I did not.”
Vanessa smiled at Lila.
“You may leave.”
When they were alone, Vanessa closed the bedroom door.
“You need to understand something,” she said. “Daniel is under enormous pressure. He doesn’t have time for your complaints.”
Eleanor held her gaze.
“What do you want?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“The house. The company shares. The life Daniel inherited.”
“You married the wrong man if you believe he controls all of that.”
For the first time, Vanessa’s expression cracked.
