Chapter 1 - The Perfect Wife

Three months earlier, Daniel believed he had built the perfect life.
At thirty-eight, he was the managing director of Whitmore Development, a company his late father had founded decades ago. He lived in a luxurious white villa overlooking the hills, drove an expensive car, and had recently married a woman everyone described as elegant, intelligent, and charming.
Vanessa had entered his life during a charity gala.
She had appeared effortless in a red silk dress, speaking warmly to donors and remembering the names of every server. When Daniel mentioned that his elderly mother lived with him, Vanessa smiled and said family was the most important thing in the world.
That answer had won him completely.
Eleanor had been less certain.
“There is something practiced about her kindness,” she told Daniel privately.
Daniel laughed gently.
“You’ve known her for two dinners, Mom.”
“I have known people for seventy-two years.”
He kissed her forehead and told her she worried too much.
Eleanor had lived in the villa since Daniel was a child. After a serious fall weakened her legs, she began using a wheelchair, but her mind remained sharp. She still reviewed company reports, remembered every employee’s birthday, and knew more about the Whitmore business than most executives.
Vanessa understood that immediately.
She also understood that Daniel trusted his mother.
So she did not challenge Eleanor openly.
Not at first.
She brought her tea, arranged fresh flowers in her bedroom, and accompanied her to medical appointments. She called her “Mother Eleanor” in front of Daniel and made certain the household staff witnessed every generous gesture.
But when Daniel left for work, Vanessa’s voice changed.
The warmth disappeared.
“You should be grateful Daniel lets you stay here,” she said one morning.
Eleanor looked up from her book.
“This house belongs to the Whitmore family.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I am a Whitmore now.”

That was the first warning.
It would not be the last.
