DANIEL COMES HOME EARLY

Daniel believed he owned the villa.

In reality, the property belonged to a family trust controlled by Eleanor.

After her husband’s death, Eleanor had transferred company shares and property into the trust to protect them from reckless decisions, lawsuits, and opportunistic relationships. Daniel was the primary beneficiary, but Eleanor remained the legal trustee.

Vanessa could become Daniel’s wife.

She could not touch the trust.

Eleanor had never hidden this information from Daniel, but he paid little attention to legal details. He trusted his mother and assumed the estate would eventually pass to him.

Vanessa had discovered references to the trust while searching Daniel’s study.

She began questioning him casually.

“Why is your mother’s signature required for renovations?”

“Old legal arrangements.”

“Does she control the company too?”

“Not exactly.”

“Could she remove you?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She would never do that.”

That was all Vanessa needed to hear.

Eleanor was not merely an elderly woman living in the villa.

She was the obstacle between Vanessa and everything she wanted.

From that day, Vanessa’s behavior became calculated.

She began documenting Eleanor’s forgetfulness, even when it did not exist. She left objects in unusual places and asked Eleanor why she had moved them. She changed appointment times, then accused Eleanor of forgetting them.

She encouraged Daniel to consider a medical evaluation.

“We need to protect her,” Vanessa said.

Daniel resisted at first.

“My mother is perfectly capable.”

“She accused me of hiding her phone.”

Daniel sighed.

Eleanor watched as Vanessa turned concern into a weapon.

One night, Eleanor overheard Vanessa speaking to someone in the garden.

“The incapacity process takes time,” Vanessa said quietly. “Once Daniel has authority, he’ll sign whatever I put in front of him.”

Eleanor could not hear the other voice.

She moved her wheelchair closer to the window.
