Chapter 8 - Locker 214)

Julia refused to let Claire go alone.
They drove to the old legal archive the next morning.
Rebecca came too.
Building 214 stood downtown between a parking garage and an abandoned insurance office.
Inside, a retired clerk named Mr. Weller recognized Eleanor’s name immediately.
He also recognized the key.
“This locker hasn’t been accessed in years.”
“Who owns it?” Julia asked.
Mr. Weller checked a ledger.
His eyebrows rose.
“Technically?”
“Yes.”
“Claire Bennett.”
Claire stared.
“That’s impossible.”
The clerk turned the ledger around.
The authorization had been created six years before Claire married Daniel.
Beneficiary: Future spouse of Daniel Bennett.
Julia exhaled.
“Eleanor planned further ahead than we realized.”
Locker 214 was not a locker.
It was a private records room.
Inside were boxes.
Bank statements.
Audio recordings.
Legal drafts.
Photographs.
Medical records.
And one hard drive.
Claire sat at a small table while Julia sorted documents.
Rebecca opened a file labeled M.B.
Margaret Bennett.
Another file was labeled D.B.
Daniel.
Claire opened it.
The first page was a transcript.
Seven years earlier.
Daniel speaking to Margaret.
We need her to look unreliable before Eleanor gets anyone to listen.
Claire stopped reading.
Seven years earlier was when she had first met Daniel.
She turned the page.
Another transcript.
Margaret: The crash wasn’t enough.
Daniel: You said no one would get hurt.
Margaret: She survived.
Daniel: Exactly.
Claire froze.
“Julia.”
Julia came over.
Claire handed her the transcript.
Julia read it.
Her face changed.
“This is serious.”
“Are they talking about Eleanor’s crash?”
“It appears so.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
Daniel had known.
Maybe he had done more than know.
They found audio files stored on the hard drive.
Rebecca connected it to an archive computer.
The first recording crackled.
Then Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“She won’t stop digging.”
Daniel answered.
“She’s my aunt.”
“She’s going to destroy everything.”
“You said you had a way to scare her.”
“A minor collision.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel said, “Nothing more.”
Margaret replied, “Of course.”
The recording ended.
The next file was timestamped the day after Eleanor’s crash.
Daniel sounded panicked.
“You said minor.”
Margaret’s voice was sharp.
“Lower your voice.”
“She almost died.”
“But she didn’t.”
“I’m done.”
“No, you’re not. If you walk away now, you become the boy who helped arrange the meeting location, moved the security camera, and gave me her route.”
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered, “What do you want?”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her husband had helped prepare the circumstances of Eleanor’s crash.
He may not have intended serious injury.
But he had participated.
And Margaret had owned him ever since.
Julia looked stunned.
“This is enough to reopen the old investigation.”
Claire whispered, “Why didn’t Eleanor release it?”
A new voice came from the doorway.
“Because I loved him.”
Claire turned.
An older woman stood there.
Silver brown hair.
Sharp cheekbones.
Daniel’s eyes.
Eleanor Bennett.
Alive.
Claire could not speak.
Eleanor looked at the curve of Claire’s belly.
Then at the cast.
Her face filled with grief.
“I hoped he would become someone better.”
Claire’s voice shook.
“He didn’t.”
“No.”
Eleanor stepped inside.
“For years, I waited for Daniel to separate himself from Margaret. He married you. He seemed happy. I thought perhaps love had done what fear never could.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“He learned better ways to hide.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I know.”
“You knew this could happen to me.”
“I feared it.”
“You could have warned me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Eleanor did not defend herself.
“I was wrong.”
Claire looked away.
She wanted to hate Eleanor.
Part of her did.
But Eleanor had not pushed her.
Had not taken her money.
Had not threatened her child.
Still, Claire said, “Your trap used me.”
Eleanor flinched.
“Yes.”
“You waited for them to do something terrible enough to activate your amendment.”
“Yes.”
“My baby became part of your evidence.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Claire stood as well as her cast allowed.
“Then understand this. I am not helping you save your family name.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I’m not asking you to.”
“What are you asking?”
“To help me end Margaret’s control before she hurts your daughter.”
Claire stared.
“You know it’s a girl?”
Eleanor looked surprised.
“No.”
Claire placed a hand over her belly.
For the first time in weeks, she smiled faintly.
“It is.”
Eleanor returned the smile.
Then Julia’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her expression hardened.
“What happened?” Claire asked.
Julia lowered the phone.
“Daniel just filed for emergency custody of the unborn child after delivery.”
Claire’s smile vanished.
“He can do that?”
“He can try.”
Eleanor stepped toward the table.
Julia continued.
“He’s claiming you assaulted him and Margaret during the notary appointment.”
Rebecca laughed in disbelief.
“I witnessed everything.”
“It gets worse.”
Julia turned the phone so they could see the filing.
Attached was a photograph.
Claire lying unconscious at the bottom of the staircase after her fall.
Daniel had taken it before calling the ambulance.
Under the photograph was a caption.
Evidence of self-endangering behavior.
Claire stared at it.
Then something inside her became very still.
“They want a fight,” she said.
Julia looked at her.
“Yes.”
May you like
Claire looked at Eleanor.
“Then we stop hiding.”
