Chapter 11 - The Delivery Plan)

Margaret had tried to list herself as an authorized family representative.

She also attempted to change Daniel’s status from restricted contact to emergency decision-maker.

Hospital security stopped the changes.

But Claire understood the message.

Margaret was still planning around the birth.

Julia obtained a stricter order.

The hospital assigned a confidential registration status.

Claire’s room number would not be publicly available.

Security received photographs of Daniel and Margaret.

Rebecca helped Claire organize documents into a folder that never left her side.

Protective order.

Medical directives.

Attorney contacts.

Custody filings.

Trust amendment.

Eleanor stayed nearby.

Not because Claire had forgiven her completely.

She had not.

But because Eleanor had spent years learning how Margaret operated.

And because Claire was beginning to understand something about survivors.

Sometimes the person who failed you yesterday could still help protect you tomorrow.

Daniel requested one meeting through lawyers.

Claire initially refused.

Then Sarah’s words stayed with her.

Margaret only needs him to be weak.

Claire wanted to see whether Daniel was finally willing to look directly at what weakness had cost.

The meeting took place in Julia’s office.

Daniel sat on one side of a conference table.

Claire sat on the other.

Julia remained beside her.

Daniel looked thinner.

His eyes were tired.

He glanced at Claire’s stomach.

“How is she?”

Claire’s expression changed.

“You know?”

“Eleanor told my lawyer.”

Claire looked at Julia.

Julia shook her head slightly.

Not through them.

Daniel continued.

“A girl.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

Claire felt nothing.

He whispered, “I always wanted a daughter.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You wanted possession.”

Daniel flinched.

“That’s not fair.”

“No?”

“No.”

“You tried to establish me as mentally unstable before she was born.”

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“My mother.”

Claire stared.

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“When Eleanor disappeared, Mom told me the police would eventually blame me for the crash. She had recordings. Documents. She said she could destroy me anytime.”

“So you spent seven years helping her.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Later I stopped knowing where she ended and I began.”

For once, he sounded truthful.

Claire hated that the truth came after so much damage.

“You took my money.”

“Yes.”

“You hid medical plans from me.”

“Yes.”

“You grabbed me.”

“Yes.”

“You told people I was paranoid.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to take my daughter.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice remained steady.

“Then why are we here?”

“Because I want to stop my mother.”

“That does not erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

Daniel looked at her.

Claire continued.

“You keep talking like Margaret controlled you. Maybe she did. But every time you had a choice between protecting someone vulnerable and protecting yourself, you chose yourself.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Claire did not soften.

“You chose yourself when Eleanor was hurt. You chose yourself when Sarah lost her baby. You chose yourself on the stairs. You chose yourself when you made me look unstable. You chose yourself when you filed for custody.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

He looked up.

That seemed to hurt him more than anger.

Claire stood.

Daniel said, “Margaret has the trust certificate.”

“We know.”

“She also has something else.”

Claire stopped.

“What?”

“A recording.”

“Of what?”

“Eleanor.”

Eleanor, waiting outside, entered when she heard her name.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom recorded you the week after the accident.”

Eleanor’s face tightened.

“What recording?”

“You were on pain medication. You said you wanted the trusts dissolved.”

“That has no legal effect.”

“She edited it.”

Julia leaned forward.

“How?”

“She made it sound like you revoked the amendment.”

Eleanor went pale.

Daniel continued.

“She plans to submit it to the trustee as proof that the sealed amendment is fraudulent.”

“That won’t hold up.”

“Maybe not forever.”

Julia understood first.

“But long enough to delay the freeze.”

Daniel nodded.

“And move the money.”

Claire asked, “Where is Margaret?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Claire did not believe him.

Daniel saw it.

“I swear.”

Then his phone vibrated.

He stared at the screen.

His face changed.

He slowly turned it toward Claire.

A text from Margaret.

You always were weak.

Below it was a photograph.

Margaret standing inside Claire and Daniel’s house.

Beside a fireplace.

Holding the original trust certificate.

And a metal container of lighter fluid.
