Chapter 10 - The Twelve Million)

Claire had never wanted twelve million dollars.

She wanted sleep.

A safe apartment.

A healthy baby.

A door Daniel could not unlock.

But the money mattered because Margaret wanted it.

And anything Margaret wanted badly enough became dangerous.

The trust was designed decades earlier by Daniel’s grandfather.

Certain investment holdings accumulated for the first great-grandchild born through Daniel’s branch of the family.

Eleanor had later modified the management structure.

The child would benefit.

The parents would not control the principal directly.

An independent trustee would.

Unless both parents were deemed unable to act.

Then a temporary family trustee could assume management.

Margaret had spent years positioning herself for that role.

Claire finally understood.

If she were declared incompetent and Daniel controlled custody, Margaret could influence both the baby and the fortune.

The baby was not only family.

The baby was access.

Julia moved quickly.

She sought an emergency financial injunction.

Eleanor contacted the independent trustee named in the amendment.

Rebecca preserved copies of the coerced documents.

Police reopened questions surrounding Eleanor’s accident.

Daniel’s life began collapsing.

But he still called Claire from blocked numbers.

She never answered.

Until one night, a voicemail appeared.

“Claire, I need five minutes. I know you hate me. I know what I did was wrong. But my mother is going to run. She took something from my safe. I think it’s the trust certificate.”

Claire sent the voicemail to Julia.

Julia contacted Daniel’s lawyer.

Within an hour, Daniel offered to meet with law enforcement.

He wanted immunity.

He did not get it.

He got the possibility of reduced consequences for cooperation.

Daniel revealed everything.

Margaret kept an emergency cash account.

Two passports.

A storage facility outside Dayton.

And a safe deposit box containing original trust documents.

Police obtained warrants.

The safe deposit box was empty.

The storage facility contained only old furniture.

Margaret had anticipated him.

Then Claire received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of the baby blanket Margaret had left outside Claire’s apartment.

On the back, a message.

You think this is about money.

Ask Eleanor who your husband was supposed to marry.

Claire showed Julia.

Eleanor saw it.

And immediately sat down.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

Eleanor did not answer.

“What is she talking about?”

Eleanor rubbed her forehead.

“Daniel was engaged before you.”

Claire blinked.

“He never told me.”

“I know.”

“To who?”

“A woman named Sarah Whitmore.”

“What happened?”

“She disappeared.”

Claire stared.

“Died?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“She left.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“Margaret pressured her too.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

“Was Sarah pregnant?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Claire knew.

“She was.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to the baby?”

“She miscarried.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Daniel hurt her?”

“I do not know.”

“Did Margaret?”

“I suspect Sarah believed so.”

Claire stood too quickly and winced as weight shifted onto her cast.

“Where is Sarah?”

“Arizona, last I knew.”

“Find her.”

“Claire.”

“Find her.”

Two days later, Sarah Whitmore called.

Her voice shook when Claire introduced herself.

“I wondered when one of you would find me.”

Claire swallowed.

“I’m Daniel’s wife.”

“I know.”

“I’m pregnant.”

Silence.

Then Sarah whispered, “How far?”

“Thirty one weeks.”

Another silence.

“Get away from him.”

“I did.”

“Good.”

“Sarah, I need to know what happened.”

Sarah began crying.

Not loudly.

The quiet crying of someone reopening a room she had spent years sealing shut.

“Daniel didn’t hit me.”

Claire waited.

“But he let Margaret control everything.”

“What did she do?”

“She convinced him I was unstable. She called doctors. She told my parents I was suicidal. She put medication in a bottle that wasn’t prescribed to me.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Did you take it?”

“No. I found out.”

“What happened to your pregnancy?”

Sarah’s voice broke.

“I started bleeding after Margaret shoved me against a bathroom counter during an argument.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“She told Daniel I fell.”

“And Daniel?”

“He believed her.”

“Did he see it?”

“No.”

“Did he ever ask you?”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“He asked why I was destroying his mother’s life.”

Claire looked out the window.

There were some forms of betrayal more terrible than violence.

Choosing not to know was one of them.

Before hanging up, Sarah said something Claire would remember forever.

“Margaret doesn’t need Daniel to be cruel. She only needs him to be weak.”

That night, Claire dreamed of the staircase.

But this time Daniel did not grab her.

He simply stood aside while Margaret pushed.

When Claire woke, her phone was ringing.

Hospital.

Her obstetrician.

Claire answered.

“Mrs. Bennett, we need you to come in.”

Her heart jumped.

“Is something wrong with the baby?”

“No. Your baby appears fine.”

“Then what?”

A pause.

“Someone attempted to change the authorized contact and discharge information on your delivery file.”

Claire went cold.

May you like

“Who?”

“Your mother-in-law.”
