CHAPTER 2: The Woman Ryan Tried to Silence

The day Clara learned Ryan had married Amelia, she was sitting in a children’s hospital with Lily.

The baby had a mild lung infection and needed to be monitored. Noah sat beside Clara, holding an old toy car Ryan had once bought for him.

On the television in the waiting room, an entertainment news segment was showing footage from the luxurious wedding of the Whitmore family.

At first, Clara did not pay attention.

Until she heard the name Ryan Hale.

She looked up.

On the screen, Ryan was dressed in a white suit, standing beside Amelia in a breathtaking wedding gown. He smiled, his gaze gentle, his hand resting on the bride’s waist as if she were the only woman he had ever loved.

Clara froze.

Noah saw it too.

He pointed at the screen and exclaimed:

“Mommy, that’s Daddy!”

Several people in the waiting room turned to look at them.

Clara quickly pulled Noah into her arms and gently covered his mouth. She felt the blood in her body turn cold.

Not because of jealousy.

Not because of anger toward another woman.

But because in that moment, she understood that Ryan had not only abandoned her.

He had erased the existence of their two children.

That night, Clara called Ryan.

For the first time in months, he answered.

“Clara, don’t make a scene,” he said the moment he heard her voice.

She gripped the phone tightly.

“You married someone else?”

“I had to.”

“Had to?”

“You don’t understand. Amelia can help me get everything. Once I’m stable, I’ll take care of you and the kids.”

Clara laughed through her tears.

“Have you told her about Noah and Lily?”

The line went silent.

Clara already had her answer.

“Ryan, you can’t do this to the children.”

His voice dropped lower and colder.

“Listen to me. Do not show up in front of Amelia. Her family has money, lawyers, and media connections. Who do you think they will believe? A poor woman with two children, no marriage certificate, no property, and no status?”

Clara trembled.

“Are you threatening me?”

“I’m reminding you of reality.”

After that day, Ryan blocked her number.

Clara sent emails, but received no response. She went to his company to find him, but security stopped her. She sent letters to the Whitmore mansion, but she did not know whether Amelia ever received them.

Then one day, a strange man came to Clara’s apartment.

He said he was a lawyer representing Ryan Hale. He placed an envelope of money and a silence agreement in front of her.

“Ms. Mason,” he said, “this amount is enough for you to raise your children for a while. In return, you must not approach Mr. Hale or his new family.”

Clara looked at the envelope.

For one moment, she truly wanted to take it.

Because Lily needed medicine. Noah needed school. The rent was overdue. She had very few choices left.

But then Noah walked out of the bedroom. He looked at the strange lawyer and asked:

“Mommy, did Daddy send money for me? Is Daddy coming home soon?”

Clara looked at her son.

The child still believed his father was a good man.

And that was exactly why she could not sign.

She pushed the envelope back.

“Tell Ryan,” Clara said, “I don’t need hush money. I need him to be a father.”

The lawyer left with an annoyed expression.

That night, Clara received a message from an unknown number.

Don’t force me to make you lose everything.

There was no name attached.

But Clara knew it was Ryan.

Meanwhile, Amelia began noticing strange things during the fourth month of her pregnancy.

Ryan often disappeared at night. He said he was meeting business partners, but when he came home, there was always a faint scent of baby lotion on his clothes.

Once, Amelia found a small pink hair clip in the pocket of his jacket.

When she asked him about it, Ryan only smiled.

“Maybe my partner’s daughter was playing around and put it there.”

Amelia did not fully believe him.

But she was pregnant. She did not want to become a suspicious wife. She told herself that maybe her emotions were making her more sensitive.

Until one afternoon, Amelia received a call from an unknown number.

A woman’s voice came through the line.

“Are you Amelia Whitmore?”

“Yes. Who is this?”

“My name is Clara Mason. I need to talk to you about your husband.”

Amelia went silent.

“My husband?”

“Ryan Hale.”

Amelia’s voice immediately turned cold.

“I don’t know who you are, but if you are about to say something baseless—”

“I have two children with him.”

That sentence made Amelia stand up from her chair.

She could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.

“What did you say?”

“I know you won’t believe me right away. I don’t blame you. I only ask you to meet me once. I have birth records, photos, messages, and hospital documents. I don’t want to destroy your family. But my children do not deserve to be erased from their father’s life.”

Amelia ended the call.

She did not have the courage to hear more.

That night, Ryan came home with a bouquet of white roses. He said he wanted to take her dress shopping for the gender reveal party. He excitedly talked about the cake, the music, and the guest list.

Amelia sat across from him and quietly observed him.

“Ryan,” she asked, “before you met me, did you ever have children?”

Ryan froze for less than a second.

But Amelia saw it.

Then he laughed.

“Who told you that nonsense?”

“Answer me.”

Ryan put down the flowers, walked around the table, and knelt in front of her.

“Amelia, look at me. I know you’re pregnant and easily worried. But I swear to you, I have never had another family. You and our baby are everything to me.”

He placed his hand on her belly.

“Don’t let outsiders ruin our happiness.”

Amelia looked at his hand.

Before, his touch had made her feel safe.

Now, it only made her feel cold.

She said nothing more.

But the next day, Amelia went to the address Clara had sent her.

It was an old apartment building at the edge of the city. The hallway was narrow, the walls were peeling, and the stairwell smelled damp.

Clara opened the door with Lily in her arms.

Noah stood behind her, looking at Amelia with curious eyes.

Amelia looked at the two children.

She almost did not need a DNA test to see the truth.

Noah had Ryan’s eyes.

Lily had his chin so clearly it hurt.

Clara did not cry, scream, or demand that Amelia leave Ryan. She only placed an old box in front of her.

Inside the box were photos of Ryan holding newborn Noah in the hospital. There was a video of Ryan helping Noah learn how to walk. There were messages he had sent Clara when Lily was born. There were hospital records listing Ryan Hale as the emergency contact.

There was even a handwritten birthday card:

To Noah, my firstborn son.
I promise I will become a man you can be proud of.

Amelia stared at that line for a long time.

She did not cry.

The deeper the pain, the quieter she became.

Clara sat across from her, her voice hoarse.

“I’m sorry I had to find you. But Ryan has abandoned the children for too long. I don’t want your money. I don’t want to fight you for your husband. I only want him to admit his responsibility.”

Amelia looked at Clara.

At first, she had prepared herself to hate this woman.

But after seeing the small apartment, the two children, and Clara’s exhausted eyes, she realized the person she should hate was not sitting in front of her.

The person she should hate was living in her mansion, sleeping in her bed, placing his hand on her belly, and lying with the gentlest voice.

Amelia closed the box.

“Would you dare to come to the gender reveal party?”

Clara was stunned.

“You want me to go there?”

“I want the truth to go there.”

Clara shook her head.

“Ryan will not leave me alone.”

May you like

Amelia looked straight into her eyes.

“Ryan no longer gets to decide.”
