CHAPTER 1: The Man Amelia Thought She Knew

Three months earlier, Amelia had believed her life had entered its most beautiful chapter.

She was the only daughter of the Whitmore family, owners of one of the city’s most famous luxury hotel chains. Since childhood, Amelia had been taught to be strong, kind, and protective of her own dignity.

She was not the kind of wealthy young woman who depended only on her parents’ money. After graduating from university, she ran a charity foundation that supported single mothers and children in difficult situations.

It was at one of those charity events that she met Ryan Hale.

Back then, Ryan was not especially rich, but he knew exactly how to appear impressive.

He was elegant, calm, and always seemed responsible. He told Amelia that he had grown up poor, that he had built everything by himself, and that he had once been betrayed in love, which made him afraid of being hurt again.

Amelia believed him.

Not because she was foolish.

But because Ryan was extremely good at hiding the truth.

He always appeared at the right time. When Amelia was exhausted from work, Ryan brought food to her office. When she organized charity events, he quietly helped with every small detail. When the media criticized her for a failed project, Ryan held her hand and said:

“Even if the whole world turns its back on you, I will still be here.”

Amelia believed that sentence with all her heart.

After a year of dating, Ryan proposed to her in a restaurant overlooking the river. He knelt down, held up a diamond ring, and his eyes turned red.

“Amelia, I have nothing but a sincere heart. Will you let me take care of you for the rest of my life?”

She cried and said yes.

Amelia’s father, Edward Whitmore, never fully trusted Ryan.

He was an experienced man and had a sharp eye for people. From the first time they met, he felt there was something too smooth, too perfect about Ryan.

A man who always said the right thing, smiled at the right time, and acted humble in front of wealthy people was not always kind.

Sometimes, he was performing.

But Amelia loved Ryan.

And as a father, Edward could not crush his daughter’s happiness without proof.

The wedding was luxurious but intimate. Ryan moved into the Whitmore family mansion. After the wedding, Edward gave him a management position in the hotel company.

Within a few months, Ryan changed quickly.

He began wearing more expensive suits, driving luxury cars, and attending business gatherings as the son-in-law of the Whitmore family. He told Amelia he was doing it all so he could be worthy of her.

Amelia believed him.

Then she became pregnant.

The day the doctor confirmed she was twelve weeks along, Ryan hugged her tightly. He smiled, kissed her forehead, and said:

“This is the greatest gift of my life.”

Amelia looked at him, filled with happiness.

She never suspected that the man in front of her had once said the same thing to another woman.

A woman named Clara Mason.

Clara did not enter Amelia’s life as a homewrecker.

She entered it as a woman who had been pushed to the edge.

Four years earlier, Clara had worked as a waitress at a small café near the financial district. She met Ryan one rainy afternoon when he walked into the café looking exhausted, his shirt soaked through.

Ryan had nothing back then.

He said he was trying to start a business, that his family looked down on him, and that if just one person believed in him, he could accomplish anything.

Clara believed him.

She was not wealthy like Amelia. She had no mansion, no powerful parents, no media attention. But she had a soft heart.

She lent Ryan money.

She cooked for him.

She stayed up late helping him revise business plans.

She comforted him after every failure.

When Clara became pregnant with their first child, Ryan held her for a long time.

“I promise I will give you and our child a better life,” he said.

Their son, Noah, was born in a small rented apartment. Ryan cried the first time he held him. At least in that moment, Clara believed his tears were real.

But after that, Ryan began coming home late.

He said he was meeting investors.

Then he said his company was in trouble.

Then he said he needed to travel for work.

Clara did not doubt him. She was busy taking care of their child, busy working, and busy believing that the man she loved was fighting for their family.

When Clara became pregnant with their second child, Ryan disappeared for longer periods of time.

One night, Noah had a high fever. Clara called Ryan seventeen times.

He did not answer once.

That night, she carried Noah to the hospital alone in the cold rain.

Ryan appeared the next morning. He hugged her, said his phone had died, and claimed he had been so exhausted that he fell asleep in a hotel.

Clara forgave him again.

When their daughter, Lily, was born, Ryan visited the hospital only once. He stood beside the bed, looked at the baby, and said:

“I’m sorry, Clara. I’ve been under too much pressure lately. Give me more time.”

Clara did not know that the time he asked for was not to build a future for her and the children.

It was to prepare himself to enter Amelia’s life.

Ryan met Amelia when Lily was only two months old.

He hid everything.

To Amelia, he was a single man who had once been betrayed.

To Clara, he was the father of her children who had not officially married her because he was “waiting for financial stability.”

To his friends, he was a man waiting for the perfect chance to change his life.

Worse than that, Ryan had once convinced Clara to sign several documents that he claimed were meant to “protect the family’s finances.” Clara had been exhausted after giving birth and did not understand all the complicated terms. She only knew Ryan said he needed her signature to get a business loan.

Later, she discovered those documents made it almost impossible for her to demand support from him without clear proof of his responsibility.

Ryan was not stupid.

He was cruel in a calculated way.
