Chapter 6 - THE CFO WHO LOCKED DOWN AN EMPIRE

Elena did what she had spent fifteen years learning to do during financial emergencies.

She stopped reacting emotionally.

She built a wall.

Within twenty minutes she had Vance Meridian's cybersecurity director isolating every executive server tied to Julian.

She ordered the corporate treasury team to suspend transfers requiring his authorization.

She contacted outside counsel.

She moved sensitive audit records into an independent evidence repository.

And she told Maya to leave the office.

Maya refused.

"I'm not leaving you alone in this."

"You aren't useful to me if someone intercepts you."

"That's a terrible motivational speech."

"Go home."

Maya paused.

"Someone is deleting files."

Elena stood straighter.

"Which files?"

"European logistics."

The forty-seven-million-dollar discrepancy.

"Can you stop it?"

"I copied everything before they started."

Elena smiled faintly.

"That's why I pay you too much."

"You don't."

"Leave, Maya."

This time she listened.

Elena returned to Julian's room.

He looked exhausted.

Serena sat under security supervision near the window.

Dr. Harris had gone to speak with legal counsel.

Elena placed her phone on the bedside table.

"Forty-seven million dollars."

Julian's eyes opened.

"What?"

"That's how much disappeared from European logistics."

He did not react.

"Was it Vesper?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

"Then who?"

Julian looked away.

Elena felt something shift.

This was separate.

Another layer.

"The affair was Vesper. The hidden patients were Vesper. But the forty-seven million wasn't."

Julian remained silent.

"Where did the money go?"

He whispered, "Insurance reserves."

"What insurance reserves?"

"For the Continuity families."

"Explain."

Julian stared at her.

"Every family involved in Vesper pays into a private reserve."

"Vance Meridian is a public company."

"I know."

"You stole shareholder money."

"I moved it temporarily."

"That's theft."

"I was trying to buy access."

"To Daniel?"

"To all of it."

Elena shook her head.

"You could have come to me."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you're predictable."

She almost laughed.

"Predictable?"

"You follow rules."

"Yes."

"That's exactly why I couldn't tell you."

"You thought the responsible choice was corporate fraud?"

"I thought the responsible choice was getting my brother out."

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

"And Serena?"

Julian's face tightened.

"At first I knew she was watching me."

Serena looked up.

Elena's stomach turned.

"You knew?"

"Not exactly who she worked for. But I knew she had been placed near me."

"So you started sleeping with her?"

"I thought I could use her."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Tell her the rest."

Julian glared.

Serena looked at Elena.

"He fell in love with me."

Elena's face did not change.

Julian whispered, "Serena."

"No. You've destroyed both of us. She should hear it."

Serena stood.

"He wasn't pretending after six months. He rented an apartment. He gave me a ring. He said once Daniel was safe, he was leaving you."

Silence filled the room.

Elena looked at Julian.

He could not meet her eyes.

There were betrayals a person could explain.

This was not one of them.

Something inside Elena closed.

Not broke.

Closed.

She removed her wedding ring.

Julian watched.

She placed it beside his phone.

"Now we understand each other."

"Elena."

"No. We don't discuss us again."

She turned toward the door.

Julian called after her.

"You still need me."

Elena stopped.

"For what?"

"Because the red folder isn't the archive."

She looked back.

May you like

Julian's expression was grim.

"It's only the index."
