Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE SURGEON CALLED

Six hours earlier, Elena had been standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows of Vance Meridian Group when her phone rang.
Below her, Manhattan glittered beneath a cold November rain.
The quarterly earnings meeting had ended thirty minutes earlier. Elena had just finished exposing a forty-seven-million-dollar discrepancy in the company's European logistics division, a discrepancy Julian had dismissed for months as an accounting delay.
She was the CFO.
Numbers were not simply her profession.
They were how she recognized lies.
The call came from St. Matthew's Private Medical Center.
"Mrs. Vance?"
"Speaking."
"This is Dr. Harris. Your husband has been admitted."
Elena turned away from the window.
"What happened?"
"He was brought in with internal bleeding. We performed emergency surgery."
The room seemed to tilt.
Despite everything that had been wrong between them lately, despite the unexplained late nights and the mysterious expenses and the way Julian had started turning his phone facedown whenever Elena entered a room, instinct still moved faster than suspicion.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes. He's stable now."
Elena grabbed her coat.
"I'm coming."
Then Dr. Harris said something strange.
"There was a woman with him."
Elena stopped.
"What woman?"
There was a pause.
"She identified herself as his wife."
Elena's fingers tightened around the phone.
"What was her name?"
"Serena Brooks."
For several seconds, Elena heard nothing except rain against glass.
Serena Brooks.
Thirty-four years old.
Public relations consultant.
Beautiful.
Charming.
A woman Elena had met at three charity galas and once invited into her own home for Christmas drinks.
Elena had suspected an affair.
Suspicion was very different from hearing that your husband's mistress had walked into a hospital and called herself his wife.
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes."
She ended the call.
Her assistant, Maya Chen, looked up from the doorway.
"Is everything all right?"
Elena stared at the city.
"No."
Maya waited.
Elena had worked with her for seven years. There were few people she trusted more.
"Julian is in the hospital."
Maya's expression changed immediately.
"Do you need a car?"
"Yes."
Elena picked up her handbag.
Then something stopped her.
The discrepancy from the European division.
Forty-seven million dollars.
The transactions had been authorized through a subsidiary Julian personally supervised.
Elena turned back toward her desk.
"Maya."
"Yes?"
"Send me the audit folder."
"Now?"
"Now."
Maya hesitated.
Elena looked at her.
"And quietly download every transaction associated with Julian's executive authorization code for the last five years."
Maya understood immediately.
"Is this about the audit?"
"I don't know yet."
Elena left.
Twenty minutes later, she entered the executive floor of St. Matthew's.
The corridor smelled of antiseptic and expensive flowers.
Serena stood outside Room 814.
She was still wearing the champagne gown from whatever event she and Julian had attended together.
Her makeup was smudged.
A diamond bracelet glittered on her wrist.
Elena recognized it.
She had seen the charge three weeks earlier.
Twenty-two thousand dollars at Laurent & Devereux.
Julian had told her it was a retirement gift for a board member.
Serena saw Elena and went pale.
Neither woman spoke.
Elena walked directly past her.
Dr. Harris intercepted her.
"Mrs. Vance."
"The legal one," Elena said.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry about the confusion."
"How bad is he?"
"The surgery went well. He had a ruptured intestinal vessel. We stopped the bleeding."
"What caused it?"
"We're still running tests."
Elena looked through the glass panel.
Julian lay unconscious.
For one second, she remembered the man she had married.
The man who had danced barefoot with her in their kitchen at two in the morning.
The man who had held her after her father died.
The man who had once promised there would never be secrets between them.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Maya.
I found something.
A second message arrived.
Actually, I found a lot.
Elena looked at Serena.
"How long?"
Serena swallowed.
"What?"
"You and my husband."
Serena glanced toward the nurses' station.
"This isn't the place."
"Then choose another one."
"Elena."
"How long?"
Serena's voice became smaller.
"Eighteen months."
Elena had expected pain.
Instead she felt clarity.
"Eighteen months."
"I'm sorry."
"No, you're frightened."
Serena's eyes flickered.
Elena noticed.
"Why?"
Serena said nothing.
"Why are you frightened, Serena?"
Before she could answer, an orderly emerged from Julian's room holding a clear property bag.
"Mrs. Vance?"
Both women turned.
The orderly looked between them.
Inside the bag were Julian's wallet, watch, phone, cuff links, and a small brass key.
"These were your husband's personal effects."
Serena stepped forward.
"I'll take them."
Elena reached the bag first.
The moment Serena saw the key, panic flashed across her face.
It lasted less than a second.
For Elena, that was enough.
She took the bag.
Serena whispered, "You should give that to me."
Elena looked down at the key.
"Why?"
"It's nothing."
"Then you shouldn't care."
Serena's breathing changed.
Elena slipped the key into her pocket.
"What does it open?"
Serena stared at her.
And made the mistake that changed everything.
She looked toward Julian's black leather overnight bag resting beneath a chair.
Elena followed her gaze.
May you like
Then smiled.
"Thank you."
