Chapter 13 - THE ASSISTANT WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Elena called Maya.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Hale ordered agents to Maya's apartment.

Empty.

Her laptop was gone.

Clothes were gone.

Passport missing.

She had left deliberately.

Elena felt something sharper than betrayal.

Humiliation.

She had trusted Maya more than almost anyone.

Every audit.

Every private schedule.

Every board conversation.

Every concern about Julian.

Maya knew all of it.

Nora studied the photograph.

"When was this taken?"

Hale checked the back.

"Four months ago."

Julian stared.

"I've met Maya dozens of times."

"Apparently she knew Daniel," Elena said.

Julian shook his head.

"No. Daniel would have told me."

Nora looked at him.

"Why do you still believe your brother tells you the truth?"

Julian fell silent.

Federal analysts examined the ledgers.

The forty-seven million dollars Julian had moved did not go directly to Vesper.

It went through Marrowridge Capital.

Then the money separated into dozens of accounts.

One belonged to Maya.

Six million dollars.

Elena felt numb.

Grace asked the obvious question.

"Was she helping Julian?"

"No," Julian said.

"I never transferred money to Maya."

"Your authorization credentials were used."

"They were copied."

Elena remembered countless late nights when Maya had access to executive financial systems.

It would not have been difficult.

Then an analyst found something stranger.

Maya Chen did not legally exist before age twenty-seven.

Her university records had been backfilled.

Her Social Security history began late.

Her childhood addresses led nowhere.

Nora whispered, "Continuity identity."

"What?"

"People removed from the system sometimes receive replacement identities."

Elena looked at Maya's photograph.

"Who was she before?"

Hale's team searched biometric databases.

Three hours later they found a probable match.

Missing child report.

Massachusetts.

1998.

Name: Rebecca Vale.

Age at disappearance: nine.

Elena stared at the childhood photo.

Same eyes.

Same small crescent-shaped scar beside the eyebrow.

Rebecca's father had been a physician.

Dr. Alexander Vale.

One of the names listed in the Vance Continuity Directory.

STATUS CLOSED.

Hale searched deeper.

Alexander Vale had been publicly reported dead in a plane crash in 2004.

His body had never been recovered.

Elena whispered, "Another fake death?"

Nora shook her head.

"Maybe."

Then Julian's phone rang.

No one had touched it for hours.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

Hale activated recording.

Julian answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice replied.

"Little brother."

Julian went completely still.

"Daniel."

Elena felt Nora tense beside her.

Daniel laughed softly.

"You always were terrible at keeping boxes closed."

Julian's voice shook.

"Where are you?"

"Safe."

"What did you do to Maya?"

Daniel paused.

Then answered.

"Nothing."

Elena stepped closer.

"Where is she?"

Daniel recognized her voice.

"Elena."

She hated the warmth in his tone.

"We've waited a long time to speak."

"Where is Maya?"

"She came to me willingly."

"Why?"

"Because Maya understands what your father was trying to protect."

Elena gripped the table.

"People imprisoned in private facilities?"

"No."

"Then explain it."

Daniel sighed.

"You've discovered the prison and assumed the walls were built to keep people in."

"What else would they be for?"

May you like

Daniel's answer silenced the room.

"To keep something from getting out."
