Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER WHO BECAME THE JAILER

Julian refused to believe Nora.

"My brother would never run Vesper."

Nora sat across from his hospital bed.

"You haven't seen him in person for seventeen years."

"He was a victim."

"So was I."

Nora's voice remained calm.

"Victims don't remain one thing forever."

Elena watched Julian.

He looked devastated.

Nora explained that Daniel had eventually become useful to Vesper.

Intelligent.

Charismatic.

A Vance heir with intimate knowledge of the system.

At first, he cooperated to improve conditions.

Then he began managing facilities.

Then finances.

Then transfers.

"He told himself he was protecting patients from worse people," Nora said.

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"He saved lives."

"Then why are people locked away?"

"Because he also preserved the system."

Julian looked toward Elena.

"I spoke to him last year. He sounded afraid."

"He was afraid."

"Of Calder?"

Nora laughed without humor.

"Calder works for Daniel."

Silence.

Serena closed her eyes.

Even she had not known.

Elena asked, "Then who triggered Protocol 9?"

Nora looked at Julian.

"Daniel."

Julian went pale.

"Why?"

"Because Elena opened the archive."

Elena stared.

"He was watching me?"

"He has always watched you."

"Why?"

Nora turned toward her.

"Because your father left something with you."

"I don't have anything."

"You do."

"What?"

Nora studied her face.

"A sequence."

Elena almost laughed.

"A what?"

"Your father couldn't safely store documents. So he taught information to you in pieces."

Elena remembered childhood games.

Numbers.

Sequences.

Her father's puzzles.

Sunday mornings at the kitchen table.

He would give her strange combinations and ask her to identify patterns.

3-11-8-21.

7-4-19-2.

She had assumed they were games.

Nora said, "Think about the sequence he repeated most often."

Elena did not need to think.

"Three. Eleven. Eight. Twenty-one."

Nora nodded.

"That's the first key."

"To what?"

"My father's archive?"

"Our father's insurance policy."

Elena stared.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then how does the sequence help?"

"It isn't a location."

"What is it?"

Nora moved closer.

"It's a date."

March 11, 1982?

November 8, 2021?

Elena considered combinations.

Then she understood.

3-11-8-21.

Third book.

Eleventh page.

Eighth line.

Twenty-first word.

A book cipher.

Her father had taught her those too.

"What book?"

Nora smiled.

"The only book he gave both of us."

Elena's heart accelerated.

Her father had given her one book every birthday.

But there was one he had insisted she keep forever.

A worn copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.

A story about imprisonment.

Hidden identity.

Betrayal.

And revenge.

Elena whispered, "Mine is at home."

Nora shook her head.

"Not anymore."

Elena stared.

"What do you mean?"

"When Protocol 9 began, someone entered your apartment."

Elena immediately called building security.

No answer.

Then Maya called.

"Elena."

Her voice shook.

"What happened?"

"Someone broke into your penthouse."

"The book?"

"What book?"

"Never mind. Was anything taken?"

Maya paused.

"The police said almost nothing was disturbed."

"Almost?"

"Your father's study."

Elena closed her eyes.

May you like

"What did they take?"

"Every book."
