Chapter 9 - The Truth Nathan Faced
The legal consequences came quickly.
The court froze Vanessa’s assets and placed the girls’ trust accounts under independent management. Investigators uncovered falsified invoices, stolen property, tax fraud, and the misuse of charitable funds.
Marcus agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing. His records confirmed that Vanessa had planned to move millions overseas after Christmas.
The marriage was annulled months later.
Yet Nathan understood that removing Vanessa did not repair everything.
His daughters had learned to hide food in napkins. They asked permission before opening the refrigerator. Sophie apologized whenever she spoke about the past.
Nathan arranged counseling and brought Mrs. Alvarez back to the mansion. Paige received a permanent position overseeing the children’s care, though Nathan made it clear that no employee would ever replace him again.
He reduced his business responsibilities and appointed a new chief executive to handle daily operations.
For the first time, he began attending ordinary moments.
He waited outside ballet lessons.
He helped Lily build a model volcano.
He listened to Grace tell jokes that made no sense.
He sat beside Ava while she drew pictures at the kitchen table.
One evening, Sophie asked the question he had been dreading.
“Why didn’t you believe me?”
Nathan did not defend himself.
“I should have listened.”
“Were you too busy?”
“Yes.”
“Were we less important?”
Nathan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Never. But I behaved as though you were, and that was wrong.”
Sophie studied him carefully.
“Will you leave again?”
“I’ll travel sometimes. But you will always be able to reach me, and no one will ever stop you from telling me the truth.”
He gave each daughter a private phone connected directly to him. He also created a rule for the entire household.
No child would ever be punished for asking for help.
