Chapter 5 - The Woman Vanessa Fired

Nathan contacted Mrs. Alvarez privately.

She agreed to meet Daniel at a café outside Denver. At first, she refused to criticize Vanessa. She had worked for the Caldwell family for seventeen years and still felt responsible for protecting its reputation.

Then Daniel showed her the trust withdrawals.

Mrs. Alvarez began to cry.

“She told the girls their father would send them away if they complained,” she said. “She said he had chosen a new family.”

Daniel recorded her statement with permission.

Mrs. Alvarez explained that Vanessa had grown jealous of the attention Nathan gave his daughters. She resented Emily’s portraits, Emily’s trust funds, and the fact that the mansion would eventually belong to the children.

Before dismissing Mrs. Alvarez, Vanessa had ordered the staff to remove several family heirlooms from the vault. Among them was Nathan’s mother’s diamond necklace.

Nathan immediately remembered seeing Vanessa wear it in a photograph from a New York gala.

The evidence was growing, but he still needed proof of how the money moved.

Daniel traced the false companies to Marcus. Bank records showed that trust funds had paid for a luxury renovation in Manhattan and several enormous private debts.

Then Paige contacted Mrs. Alvarez.

She had discovered Daniel’s number through an old household directory. Her message contained only one sentence.

I have recordings, but the children cannot know I sent them.

Daniel arranged a secure transfer. Paige uploaded financial photographs, staff messages, and security footage from the mansion’s internal system.

One video showed Vanessa telling the chef to serve the girls only bread and soup after they refused to call her “Mom.”

Another showed her laughing with Marcus while discussing the trust accounts.

“They’re five,” Marcus said. “They’ll never know.”

Vanessa replied, “By the time they understand, everything will be mine.”

Nathan watched the recording alone in his hotel room.

When it ended, he closed the laptop and stared at the dark window.

His own absence had given Vanessa the power to hurt his children.

That truth was harder to face than her betrayal.
