Chapter 2 - The New Mrs. Caldwell
Nathan had met Vanessa at a charity auction in Denver.
She was elegant, charming, and unusually attentive whenever he spoke about his daughters. She volunteered at children’s hospitals, supported education programs, and claimed that family mattered more to her than wealth.
For nearly a year, she seemed patient with the girls.
She attended school performances, arranged birthday parties, and helped decorate their rooms. When Nathan proposed, Sophie had asked only one question.
“Will she still be nice after the wedding?”
Nathan had laughed gently.
“Of course.”
He wished later that he had understood what the question meant.
The changes began slowly after the marriage.
Vanessa replaced the longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Alvarez, claiming the older woman was no longer efficient. She dismissed the girls’ nanny and hired a younger assistant named Paige, who reported directly to her.
She moved the children’s playroom from the sunny first floor to a smaller room near the service hallway because, she said, toys made the mansion appear untidy.
Whenever Nathan was home, Vanessa remained affectionate and attentive. The girls wore beautiful clothes, ate with the family, and seemed comfortable.
Whenever he traveled, the rules changed.
Dessert became a reward for silence.
Telephone calls with Nathan were supervised.
The girls were told not to mention household matters because their father was under too much pressure.
Sophie tried once.
During a video call from London, she said, “Daddy, Vanessa says we cost too much.”
Vanessa laughed from behind the camera.
“She heard me discussing the household budget and misunderstood.”
Nathan accepted the explanation.
After the call, Vanessa took Sophie’s tablet away for a week.
“You embarrassed me,” she said. “Your father needs a wife who can manage this family, not children who create problems.”

From that day forward, the girls smiled whenever Nathan called.
