Chapter 15 - The Meeting That Has Not Ended

The dining room had been transformed.

The same table where Vivian had humiliated Emma now held stacks of legal documents.

The same chandelier illuminated faces that looked nothing like they had the night before.

Nobody laughed.

The trustees sat at one end.

Marcus stood beside Emma.

Daniel sat opposite her.

Vivian refused to sit.

Rachel kept looking toward the door.

Anna placed the original trust in the center of the table.

"The conditions have been satisfied."

One trustee nodded.

"Then the transfer process begins."

Vivian stepped forward.

"I object."

The trustee looked at her.

"On what grounds?"

"This trust is fraudulent."

Marcus shook his head.

"The documentation has been independently authenticated."

Vivian looked at Emma.

"You planned this."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"You've been manipulating everyone."

"No."

"You want my family's fortune."

Emma's voice remained calm.

"I wanted my husband to tell me the truth."

Daniel looked down.

Vivian pointed at him.

"He was protecting us."

Emma looked at Daniel.

"Was he?"

Daniel finally raised his eyes.

"I was trying."

Emma shook her head.

"Trying isn't the same as telling the truth."

The trustee opened the final document.

"The controlling beneficiary will be announced after the final verification."

Daniel looked nervous.

"What verification?"

The trustee didn't answer.

Vivian moved closer.

"You cannot take this house."

Emma looked at her.

"I never said I wanted it."

"Then what do you want?"

Emma paused.

"The truth."

The room went silent.

She looked at Daniel.

"Did you know about the second beneficiary?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Anna spoke.

"He didn't."

Everyone turned.

Anna continued:

"But his father did."

Vivian stared at her.

"Richard is dead."

"Yes."

"Then why are we still talking about him?"

Anna opened the leather case again.

She removed one final envelope.

"This was delivered to me six years ago."

Emma stared.

"Why six years?"

"Because that was when Daniel married you."

Daniel looked at her.

"What does it say?"

Anna looked toward Emma.

"It's addressed to her."

Emma took the envelope.

Her hands trembled slightly.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only three lines.

Emma,

If you have reached this point, then Daniel has failed to tell you the truth.

And if he has failed you, there is only one person left who can explain why I chose him.

Emma looked up.

"Who?"

Anna didn't answer.

The door opened.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

Daniel's face went completely white.

Vivian staggered backward.

Rachel whispered:

"That's impossible."

Emma stared.

The man looked directly at her.

He smiled.

"I think it's time you knew who your father was really protecting."

Daniel stood.

"You're dead."

The man shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Emma.

"Your father made sure everyone believed I was."

The room fell silent.

Emma's fingers tightened around the letter.

The man stepped forward.

"And now that the trust has been activated, the Mercer family no longer has the power to stop me."

Vivian whispered:

"What do you want?"

The man looked at her.

"Not what I want."

He turned toward Emma.

"What your father promised me."

Emma stared at him.

"What promise?"

The man smiled.

"That one day, when the Mercers finally turned against you, I would return."

He placed a sealed document on the table.

Emma looked down at it.

Her name was written across the front.

Underneath it was another name.

A name she had never seen in any of the documents.

A name that made Marcus suddenly step backward.

Emma looked at him.

"Marcus?"

He said nothing.

The stranger smiled.

"Ask your attorney."

Emma's eyes narrowed.

"What does he know?"

The man turned toward the door.

"More than he has told you."

He left.

Nobody moved.

Emma slowly looked at Marcus.

"Is that true?"

Marcus remained silent.

Daniel stared at him.

"Marcus..."

Emma's voice became colder.

"How long have you known?"

Marcus finally looked at her.

"I was waiting for the right moment."

Emma laughed softly.

"Everyone is always waiting for the right moment."

She picked up the sealed document.

"And somehow the right moment always comes after everyone has lied to me."

She began opening it.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Emma, don't."

She stopped.

"Why?"

"Because once you read that, there is no going back."

Emma looked at him.

"After everything that happened tonight..."

She pulled the seal apart.

"I don't think there was ever a way back."

The document unfolded.

Emma read the first line.

Her face changed.

Daniel stood.

Vivian whispered:

"What does it say?"

Emma didn't answer.

She read the second line.

Then the third.

Her breathing became slower.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel asked:

"Emma?"

She finally looked up.

And for the first time since the confrontation began, she looked genuinely shocked.

She turned the document around.

Nobody could see the final page.

Then Emma whispered:

"My father didn't leave me the fortune."

A long silence.

"He left me control."

Vivian frowned.

"Control of what?"

Emma looked toward the door where the mysterious man had disappeared.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Everything."

The lights suddenly went out.

A phone rang somewhere in the darkness.

Once.

Twice.

Then a calm voice spoke from the other side of the room.

"Emma."

She froze.

The voice continued.

"Whatever you do, don't sign the final page."

The lights came back on.

The chair where the stranger had been standing was empty.

But the sealed document was gone from Emma's hands.

And on the table, beneath the crystal chandelier, lay a single photograph.

Emma picked it up.

Her eyes widened.

The photograph showed her father.

Richard Mercer.

Vivian.

Daniel.

Anna.

And one more person.

A person who should never have been there.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence:

The debt was never the real reason they needed you.

Emma slowly turned toward Daniel.

He was staring at the photograph.

He looked terrified.

"Emma..."

She raised the photograph.

"Who is this?"

Daniel said nothing.

Emma stepped closer.

"Daniel."

He finally looked at her.

Then he whispered:

"That's the person my father told me never to let you meet."

Emma stared at him.

Outside, another black vehicle stopped at the gates.

Someone stepped out.

And this time, Daniel knew exactly who it was.

He whispered one final word.

"Run."

May you like

The front doors opened.

And the next chapter of the Mercer family's secret was about to begin.
