Chapter 1 - The Apology

Two hours earlier, the Mercer dining room had been filled with laughter.
It was the kind of laughter that came from people who had never worried about the price of anything.
The crystal chandelier reflected across polished marble floors. Silverware gleamed beneath warm lighting. Expensive paintings covered the walls.
At the center of it all sat Vivian Mercer.
She had spent most of dinner telling stories about her family's success.
She spoke about investments.
She spoke about property.
She spoke about influence.
And every few minutes, she found a way to remind everyone that Daniel had married beneath the family's standards.
Emma had heard the comments before.
She had simply learned not to react.
That night, however, Vivian was determined to make her react.
"Emma," Vivian said, lifting her glass, "how fortunate you are."
Emma looked up.
"Fortunate?"
"To be sitting at this table."
Rachel laughed.
Several relatives exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Emma placed her fork down.
"I don't remember being invited because of luck."
Vivian smiled.
"Of course not. You were invited because you're Daniel's wife."
The room went quiet.
Daniel shifted in his chair.
"Mom."
Vivian ignored him.
"I simply think a woman should understand her position."
Emma studied her.
"And what position is that?"
Vivian leaned back.
"The position of someone who benefits from this family's generosity."
Emma almost laughed.
She had spent three years restructuring companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
She had rescued failing businesses.
Negotiated with banks.
Rebuilt corporate debt.
Protected executives from financial disasters.
Yet tonight, Vivian had reduced her to a woman who was supposedly lucky to sit at a dinner table.
Emma looked at Daniel.
He did not defend her.
That hurt more than Vivian's words.
Vivian noticed.
"Daniel knows what I'm talking about."
Daniel cleared his throat.
"Let's not do this tonight."
"No," Vivian said. "Tonight is exactly when we should do it."
She looked directly at Emma.
"Give me your bank password."
Several relatives stared.
Emma blinked.
"My what?"
"Your bank password."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel told me you keep certain accounts separate."
Daniel suddenly looked up.
Emma turned toward him.
"You told her that?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I was just talking to Mom."
Vivian interrupted.
"There's no reason for secrecy between family."
Emma slowly stood.
"That's interesting."
Vivian smiled.
"What is?"
"That you keep saying family whenever you want something."
Rachel snorted.
"You always make everything dramatic."
Emma looked at her.
"I haven't made anything dramatic yet."
Vivian's smile disappeared.
"You are becoming disrespectful."
Emma remained calm.
"I asked a question."
Vivian stood.
"Get on your knees and apologize."
The room froze.
Emma stared at her.
Daniel whispered:
"Mom..."
Vivian pointed toward the floor.
"You heard me."
Emma did not move.
Then Vivian grabbed her arm.
Emma lost her balance and dropped to her knees.
A gasp moved through the room.
Daniel stood.
"Mom, stop."
But he did not move toward Emma.
Vivian pointed down.
"Stay there and apologize."
Emma looked at Daniel.
"Daniel?"
He looked away.
"Just do what Mom says."
Something inside Emma went quiet.
Not broken.
Not defeated.
Finished.
She slowly stood.
She straightened her burgundy dress.
Then she smiled.
"You want my money?"
Vivian smiled back.
"Finally."
Emma nodded.
"All right."
She walked toward the marble sideboard.
Her laptop was waiting there.
Daniel's expression changed.
"Emma..."
May you like
She opened it.
"Watch carefully."
