Chapter 11 - The Original Trust

The search took eighteen hours.
By the end, Emma had three teams working across three states.
The original trust did exist.
It had never been destroyed.
It had been hidden.
And its value was far beyond anything Emma had imagined.
But there was a problem.
The trust didn't belong entirely to her.
Someone else was named.
Marcus found the document at 3:17 in the morning.
He called Emma immediately.
"We found it."
Emma sat upright.
"Where?"
"Chicago."
"Who has it?"
"An old trustee."
"Name?"
Marcus hesitated.
"You won't believe it."
"Tell me."
"Richard Mercer."
Emma stopped.
"Daniel's father?"
"Yes."
Emma stared into the darkness.
"But he's dead."
"He was."
"Then how could he be trustee?"
"Because the trust predates his death."
Emma felt something shift inside her understanding.
Her father had trusted Daniel's father.
Not Vivian.
Not Daniel.
Richard.
And if Richard had been trustee, then the Mercer family had known about her inheritance before she had.
Marcus sent the document.
Emma opened it.
The first page listed the beneficiaries.
Emma.
Then another name.
She stared.
The name belonged to Daniel.
Her husband.
She read the terms.
The trust activated upon the marriage of the two beneficiaries.
Emma whispered:
"That's why."
Marcus was silent.
"That's why Daniel married me."
"We don't know that yet."
Emma shook her head.
"We do."
She remembered Daniel's first words to her.
Not where she grew up.
Not what she loved.
He had asked about her father's company.
At the time, she'd thought it was curiosity.
Now it looked like research.
Emma continued reading.
The trust contained a clause.
If either beneficiary attempted to conceal debts from the other, control could transfer.
Emma stopped.
"Marcus."
"Yes?"
"There is a control clause."
"What does it say?"
Emma read it.
Then she smiled.
For the first time in days, she felt something resembling relief.
"Daniel made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He lied about the debt."
Marcus understood.
"If the clause activates..."
Emma nodded.
"Control changes."
"To whom?"
Emma looked at the final line.
Her smile disappeared.
"That's the problem."
Marcus asked:
"Who?"
May you like
Emma whispered:
"Someone neither of us expected."
