Chapter 9 - The Choice Daniel Made

Daniel pointed the gun at Adrian.
“Move away from my wife.”
Emma had never seen the weapon before.
His hands were steady.
That frightened her more than if they had shaken.
Adrian raised both hands and moved slightly to the side.
Daniel looked at Celeste.
“You should have stayed on the island.”
Celeste backed against the wall.
“You should have answered your daughter’s calls.”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“You know nothing about my daughter.”
“I know you signed the withdrawal.”
Emma stepped forward.
“Tell me she’s lying.”
Daniel kept the gun trained on Adrian.
“Lily was too unstable for the transplant.”
“That was the doctors’ decision.”
“It would have killed her.”
“She was already dying.”
“You don’t understand the medical situation.”
“Then explain it.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The silence lasted too long.
Emma understood.
He had made a calculation.
A transplant might save Lily.
But it might also complicate whatever plan depended on her death.
“You chose the trust,” Emma said.
“No.”
“You chose money.”
“I chose to prevent pointless suffering.”
“Without telling me.”
“You were irrational.”
“She was my child.”
“She was my child too.”
“Then why weren’t you there?”
The question struck him.
For the first time, the gun lowered slightly.
Celeste moved.
Daniel immediately raised it again.
“Do not.”
A voice sounded behind him.
“Put the weapon down.”
Maya stood at the top of the stairs.
One side of her face was bruised. She held a gun in both hands.
Daniel turned halfway.
That was enough.
Adrian lunged.
The basement erupted in movement.
A shot struck the stone wall.
Emma pulled Celeste down.
Maya shouted.
Daniel hit Adrian across the face with the gun and ran toward the storage corridor.
Security officers entered from the kitchen side.
They pursued him through the basement.
A door slammed.
By the time police arrived, Daniel was gone.
He had escaped through an old service tunnel leading to the greenhouse.
His car remained outside.
Vanessa’s was nowhere on the property.
Celeste was taken to the hospital under protection.
Adrian needed six stitches near his temple.
Maya refused treatment until she spoke with Emma.
“Someone grabbed me outside Celeste’s hotel,” she explained. “I escaped during the airport transfer.”
“Who?”
“Two private contractors. One used to work for a security company hired by Hale House.”
“Vanessa’s people.”
“Most likely.”
“Did you send the message warning me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you say Celeste was at Bellweather?”
“No.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“Then who sent it?”
“Someone who wanted you here.”
The Bellweather meeting had been a trap.
But it had also brought Celeste and the truth together.
Police searched the estate until dawn.
They found ropes, a sedative, and copies of documents accusing Emma of medical negligence.
In an upstairs fireplace, they discovered partially burned hospital records.
One page survived.
It confirmed that a donor heart had been provisionally assigned to Lily at six thirty the evening before her death.
At seven twelve, Daniel submitted a withdrawal authorization claiming both parents agreed that Lily was medically unsuitable.
Emma had never agreed.
Her signature had been forged.
Dr. Ortega arrived at the estate after police contacted him.
He read the document and went pale.
“I never saw this.”
“Could the transplant have saved her?” Emma asked.
He did not answer immediately.
“There are never guarantees.”
“Could it have?”
“Yes.”
The word destroyed what remained of Emma’s old life.
She turned away from everyone and walked into the rain.
Lily could have lived.
Daniel had ignored the calls because he already knew what was happening.
Vanessa had not missed Lily’s last breath by accident.
They had chosen not to come.
Maya followed Emma outside but kept her distance.
After several minutes, Emma returned to the house.
Her face was wet from rain and tears.
“When is the funeral?” Maya asked.
“Tomorrow.”
“Daniel may appear.”
“He will.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the trust transfer requires proof that Lily has been buried.”
Adrian looked at her.
“That requirement is not in the documents we reviewed.”
“It’s in the sealed folder.”
Emma had opened it while police searched the house.
The final transfer of control would occur only after burial, unless a surviving parent filed a dispute.
Daniel needed to stop the burial or appear to assert his claim.
Vanessa needed him to play the grieving father.
May you like
“They will come,” Emma said.
“And they will bring the evidence with them.”
