Chapter 14 - The Road North

Maya traced the academy vehicles through traffic cameras.
Three vans left Rosebridge before sunrise.
Two traveled east.
One headed north toward the Canadian border.
The vehicle was registered to a medical transport company owned by Azure Meridian Holdings.
Celeste’s company.
Emma called Celeste at the protected hospital wing.
“Did you arrange the transport?”
“No.”
“Your company owns the van.”
“Daniel took control of Azure Meridian months ago.”
“Where would they take Chloe?”
Celeste became silent.
“Tell me.”
“There is a clinic near Lake Ashford.”
“What kind of clinic?”
“Private genetics and identity reconstruction.”
Emma did not understand.
Celeste explained that the clinic provided discreet medical services for wealthy clients, including DNA record management, cosmetic alteration, and the creation of supporting medical histories for relocated dependents.
“They change children’s identities?”
“They call it protective transition.”
“They erase them.”
“Yes.”
Maya and two state officers headed north.
Emma insisted on joining them.
Adrian drove.
Rain turned to sleet as they climbed into the mountains.
During the journey, Celeste spoke through a secure call.
She told Emma what she remembered from the hospital.
She had awakened after giving birth and asked for her daughter.
Vanessa told her the baby had died.
No body was shown.
No death certificate was provided.
Weeks later, Daniel contacted her and admitted the child was alive.
He said Emma had taken her home.
Celeste believed Lily was hers.
“Why didn’t you come for her?” Emma asked.
“Daniel threatened to accuse me of abandoning her. Vanessa controlled the hospital records. I had nothing.”
“You worked for Vanessa for years.”
“To stay close.”
“To Lily?”
“To both girls.”
Celeste discovered Chloe at Rosebridge when she reviewed foundation payments.
She began collecting evidence.
Eleanor found her.
Together they tried to determine which child belonged to which mother.
“Did you know Lily was sick?” Emma asked.
“Not until the diagnosis.”
“Did you know a donor heart was available?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I tried.”
“You had my number.”
“Daniel monitored your phone.”
“Then you could have come to the hospital.”
Celeste began crying.
“I was afraid.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Everyone had been afraid.
Daniel was afraid of losing control.
Vanessa was afraid of losing the company.
Celeste was afraid of prison and exposure.
Only Lily had faced death without hiding.
At nine twenty that night, Maya found the transport van abandoned near an old service road.
The driver was unconscious but alive.
Chloe was gone.
Tracks led into the woods.
Search teams arrived.
Snow began falling.
Emma joined despite orders to remain near the vehicles.
She carried Lily’s star necklace in her pocket.
Maya found a torn piece of red fabric caught on a branch.
The same red coat Chloe wore in the Rosebridge photograph.
They followed the trail toward a frozen lake.
Near midnight, they saw a small cabin.
A light moved inside.
Officers surrounded the building.
Maya entered first.
The cabin was empty.
A cup of tea remained warm.
On the table lay Chloe’s silver star necklace.
Beside it was a photograph of Lily in the hospital.
On the back, someone had written:
One daughter was necessary.
The other is leverage.
Emma turned the photograph over again.
There was an address beneath the sentence.
Bellweather estate.
“They took her back?” Adrian asked.
Maya studied the cabin.
“No. This was prepared before we arrived.”
“A diversion?”
“Yes.”
Emma looked at the photograph.
“Then why mention Bellweather?”
Her phone rang.
The caller ID showed Lily’s old tablet.
Emma answered.
At first, she heard only wind.
Then a child whispered, “Mom?”
Emma’s knees nearly failed.
“Chloe?”
“I don’t know where I am.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Can you see anything?”
“It’s dark. There’s water.”
“Who is with you?”
The girl’s breathing changed.
“A man.”
“What man?”
“He says his name is Michael.”
May you like
Emma went still.
Her brother Michael had been dead for twenty years.
