Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Version of the Truth

Emma confronted Vanessa at Hale House headquarters.
The building occupied nine floors of glass and white marble in the financial district. Vanessa had designed every room to reflect controlled luxury.
Employees watched as Emma crossed the lobby.
Vanessa’s assistant attempted to stop her.
Emma walked past.
Vanessa stood inside her office speaking with two board members.
When she saw Emma, she dismissed them.
“You cannot continue arriving like this,” Vanessa said.
“Where is Chloe?”
Vanessa’s expression did not change.
“Who?”
“Chloe Hart.”
“I have never heard that name.”
Emma placed the photograph on the desk.
Vanessa looked at it.
Her composure slipped for less than a second.
“That child is not your concern.”
“She may be my daughter.”
“Lily was your daughter.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer that matters.”
Emma moved closer.
“You knew about the donor heart.”
Vanessa turned toward the window.
“Yes.”
The admission was so direct that Emma nearly missed it.
“You knew Daniel withdrew her.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you stop him?”
“Because Lily would not have survived the surgery.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know more than you think.”
“You were not there.”
“I had access to her records.”
“How?”
Vanessa faced her.
“Because Hale House funded the transplant program.”
Emma felt sick.
“You used donations to control the hospital?”
“I used influence to obtain information.”
“And Daniel?”
“He panicked.”
“He murdered her.”
“No.”
“He removed her from priority without my consent.”
“He believed the operation would expose the genetic records.”
Emma stared at her.
“So he chose the secret over her life.”
Vanessa’s voice hardened.
“He chose to protect everyone.”
“From what?”
“From the destruction Eleanor designed.”
“Eleanor protected us from you.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You worship a woman who manipulated children from the grave.”
“She knew what you were doing.”
“She knew pieces.”
“Then tell me the whole truth.”
Vanessa walked to a cabinet and poured water into a crystal glass.
“Daniel was involved with Celeste before he met you.”
“I know.”
“Celeste became pregnant.”
“Clara.”
“Yes.”
“Was Lily switched at birth?”
Vanessa remained silent.
Emma struck the glass from her hand.
It shattered against the wall.
“Answer me.”
Vanessa looked at the broken pieces.
“When you became pregnant, Eleanor changed the trust structure. Your child would inherit controlling shares. Daniel wanted access to those shares.”
“So he married me.”
“At first.”
The words cut deeper than Emma expected.
“At first?”
“He did not expect to love you.”
“He didn’t.”
“In his way, he did.”
“He let our daughter die.”
“He was afraid.”
“Of losing money?”
“Of losing everything.”
Emma placed both hands on the desk.
“Which child did I take home?”
Vanessa’s eyes met hers.
“The one I believed would survive.”
Emma stopped moving.
“What does that mean?”
“One infant had a cardiac marker. Doctors believed she might develop severe disease.”
“You switched them.”
“I made a decision.”
“You switched them.”
“The bracelets had already been removed during the outage. Daniel did not know which child was which.”
“Then how did you decide?”
“I had preliminary blood results.”
“Which baby was Lily?”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“The child most likely to be Celeste’s.”
The room went silent.
Emma could not feel her hands.
“You gave me Daniel and Celeste’s baby.”
“I gave you a child.”
“And you hid mine.”
“I protected her.”
“At Rosebridge?”
“She received the best education, medical care, and security.”
“She grew up without a mother.”
“She grew up alive.”
Emma slapped Vanessa.
Harder than in the hospital.
Vanessa did not react.
“You knew Lily might become sick,” Emma said.
“Yes.”
“And you gave her to me anyway.”
“I believed you would love her.”
“I did.”
“That is why I chose you.”
The cruelty of the sentence was almost impossible to comprehend.
“You chose me to watch a child die?”
“I hoped the doctors were wrong.”
“And Chloe?”
“She was healthy.”
“So you kept the healthy Hale heir hidden while Lily inherited on paper.”
Vanessa looked away.
The answer formed itself.
Vanessa could control Chloe because the girl had no legal identity connected to Emma.
Lily remained the legal beneficiary.
If Lily died, the trust passed to Emma unless Daniel proved her unfit.
Then Daniel would gain temporary control.
Later, Chloe could be introduced as the biological Hale heir under Vanessa’s guardianship.
Every outcome preserved Vanessa’s power.
“Where is Chloe now?” Emma asked.
“She is safe.”
“Where?”
“I cannot tell you.”
“You will.”
“No.”
Emma took out her phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Vanessa smiled.
“No, you didn’t.”
Emma checked the screen.
The recording had stopped the moment she entered the office.
A signal jammer.
Vanessa moved behind her desk.
“You still think evidence is enough,” she said. “Evidence only matters when institutions agree to recognize it.”
Emma looked around the office.
No witnesses.
No camera feed.
No recording.
Vanessa had confessed because she knew the confession would disappear.
But Emma had not come alone.
The connecting door opened.
Margaret Lin stepped inside.
Beside her stood one of Vanessa’s board members and a court-appointed forensic auditor.
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Margaret removed a small recorder from inside her coat.
“Your mother taught me never to trust a room she designed,” Margaret said.
Vanessa stared at Emma.
“You think you won.”
“No,” Emma said. “I think you finally spoke.”
Vanessa pressed a hidden button beneath the desk.
An alarm sounded.
Metal shutters began lowering over the office windows.
The elevator stopped responding.
Vanessa looked toward the locked door.
“You should not have forced this today.”
“Why today?”
“Because the people moving Chloe were instructed to act if I failed to check in.”
Emma’s blood went cold.
“What happens if you fail?”
Vanessa’s face revealed something worse than anger.
May you like
Fear.
“They erase her.”
