The legal process lasted six months.

Chloe pleaded guilty to attempted property fraud, forgery, and trespassing. Because she had no previous criminal record and eventually cooperated with investigators, she avoided prison.

But she did not avoid consequences.

She received probation, community service, mandatory financial counseling, and an order to repay the costs of the damaged gate, legal fees, and the police response. Her professional license as a real estate assistant was suspended.

Samuel Voss faced separate charges after investigators discovered he had created false documents for several other clients.

Frank pleaded guilty to trespassing and property damage. He was ordered to surrender the baseball bat and stay away from Carter’s property.

Diane was not charged after evidence showed she had not participated in creating the forged deed. However, she admitted under oath that she knew it was false before arriving at the lake house.

That confession ended her relationship with Chloe for several months.

The hardware store was sold. Frank and Diane moved into a small rented apartment near Duluth. Without Carter paying their debts, they were forced to live within their income.

For the first time, Carter did not rescue them.

She ignored messages accusing her of cruelty. She returned letters containing demands disguised as apologies. She accepted only communication that took responsibility without blaming stress, money, Evelyn, or Carter herself.

In early spring, Chloe sent a handwritten letter.

I wanted the house because I thought having something valuable would make me valuable. I convinced myself that you had stolen the life I deserved. You did not steal anything. I was angry because you built a life while I waited for someone to give me one.

I am sorry.

Carter read the letter several times.

She did not forgive Chloe immediately.

But she kept the letter.
