Chapter 1 - The Note Beneath the Door
Four days earlier, Carter had awakened before sunrise to the sound of something sliding across the wooden floor.
She remained still in bed, listening.
The lake house was quiet except for the wind moving through the pine trees. No footsteps followed. No car engine started outside.
Carter reached for the lamp, pulled on her cardigan, and walked into the hallway.
A folded piece of paper lay beneath the front door.
She opened it carefully.
Carter,
We will arrive Monday morning. The moving company is already booked. Your father and I will take the downstairs bedroom. Chloe needs the upstairs office because she will be working remotely.
Please clear space in the garage and pantry.
This arrangement is temporary until the family finances recover. Since the house belonged to Grandma Evelyn, it should support the whole family.
Do not make this difficult.

Carter read it twice.
The first time, she felt disbelief.
The second time, she felt something colder.
Her grandmother Evelyn had left the lake house to Carter alone. The will had been clear, properly witnessed, and confirmed in probate court. There had been no shared ownership, family trust, or promise that Frank, Diane, or Chloe could move in whenever they pleased.
But Carter knew how her family operated.
They rarely asked for help.
They announced what she would give them.
For years, Carter had paid overdue utility bills, repaired her parents’ leaking roof, covered Chloe’s car payments, and quietly settled debts that were never mentioned again.
Every rescue became proof that she could rescue them again.
Carter walked to the kitchen, placed the note beside her coffee machine, and called her attorney.
“Rachel,” she said when the woman answered, “I think my family is about to try something.”
“What kind of something?”
