Chapter 5 - The Missing Notary Seal
Rachel drove to the lake house on Sunday afternoon before the roads became impassable.
She brought a copy of Evelyn’s will, the probate judgment, the property title, and every tax record connected to the house.
They spread the papers across the dining table.
“Your ownership is solid,” Rachel said. “No liens. No shared interest. No surviving tenancy.”
“Then what was Chloe talking about?”
“I checked the county filing system. No new deed has been recorded.”
Carter looked at the snow falling beyond the tall windows.
“Could they have something that has not been filed yet?”
“Yes.”
Rachel tapped the property title.
“A forged transfer would not become valid simply because they printed it. But they might use it to confuse movers, police officers, or even you.”
“They think if they get inside, I will give up.”
“They know you have surrendered before.”
Carter did not argue.
Her family had always relied on exhaustion. They demanded, accused, and created emergencies until saying yes became easier than continuing the fight.
Rachel pulled another paper from her folder.
“I also found something unusual. Your father contacted a notary named Samuel Voss last week.”
“Do you know him?”
“He lost his commission six months ago.”
“For what?”
“Improper identification procedures and false acknowledgments.”
Carter felt the room become colder.
Rachel continued.
“If Frank or Chloe obtained a stamped document from him, it may appear official to someone who does not examine it carefully.”
Carter thought of Chloe’s confidence at the gate.
You’ll see on Monday.
“Should we confront them now?”
“No,” Rachel said. “Let them arrive. Let them present whatever they have in front of witnesses.”
Carter stared at her attorney.
“You want them to expose themselves.”
“I want them to choose whether they are merely entitled or criminally foolish.”
Outside, the wind rose from the lake.
Carter gathered the papers into a waterproof folder and placed it beside the front door.
