Chapter 15 - The Name Behind the Hero

Naomi aimed the weapon at Daniel.
The federal agents raised their rifles.
She pressed the barrel against Lily’s uninjured shoulder.
“Lower them.”
Daniel stepped in front of his daughter.
“Move away from her.”
“I said lower the weapons.”
The agents hesitated.
Naomi smiled faintly.
“You have spent years asking why every investigation failed. Why every witness disappeared. Why every piece of evidence reached Halcyon before publication.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You.”
“I was assigned to monitor Thomas.”
“You helped us.”
“I guided you.”
“You saved the records.”
“I chose which records survived.”
Lily held the tablet against her chest.
“You destroyed my science project.”
Naomi looked at her.
“That was not personal.”
“You locked Dad in the storage unit.”
“I needed to know whether Margaret would bring you.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas designed the final archive to respond to you.”
Daniel remembered every moment Naomi had been present.
The station.
The tunnel.
The storage unit.
The hidden chamber.
She had not been chasing the truth.
She had been following Lily toward it.
Outside, vehicles surrounded the property.
Naomi spoke to the agents.
“Place your weapons on the floor.”
One agent slowly complied.
The others followed.
Naomi moved toward the console.
“Give me the tablet.”
Lily shook her head.
“You detonated the tunnel.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“Adrian Cross.”
“Police said Adrian did it.”
“Police said what I instructed them to say.”
“Is he alive?”
Naomi’s expression remained calm.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Close.”
A sound came from the passage.
Footsteps.
Adrian Cross entered the room holding a rifle.
A scar crossed his chin.
Daniel moved Lily behind him.
Adrian aimed at Naomi.
“Step away from them.”
Naomi turned.
“You always arrive late.”
“And you always talk too much.”
She smiled.
“You planted the charges.”
“I placed controlled demolition devices after evacuation orders were scheduled.”
“There was no evacuation.”
“Because you canceled it.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Which one of you tried to kill my daughter?”
Neither answered.
Lily studied Adrian.
“You were in the tunnel when I was seven.”
“Yes.”
“You took my music box.”
“To protect the archive.”
“You started the fire.”
“No. Naomi did.”
Naomi’s weapon shifted toward Adrian.
He fired first.
The bullet struck her gun, throwing it from her hand.
Federal agents rushed forward.
Naomi pulled a small device from her pocket.
Adrian shouted, “Detonator!”
Lily reacted before anyone else.
She threw the metal tablet case across the room.
It struck Naomi’s wrist.
The device fell.
Daniel kicked it beneath the desk.
An agent tackled Naomi.
The alarm continued ringing.
Adrian checked the detonator.
“She already activated the charges.”
“What charges?” Daniel asked.
“The orchard is wired.”
“How long?”
Adrian looked at the display.
“Six minutes.”
The underground facility had a second exit leading through an old drainage tunnel.
The agents moved Naomi toward it.
Daniel took Lily’s hand.
“Where is Margaret?”
“The convoy footage is looped,” Adrian said. “She may not be outside.”
“What about the vehicles?”
“Most are Halcyon. Some are mine.”
“Yours?”
Adrian gave him a tired look.
“The Sparrow Committee still exists.”
They entered the drainage passage.
The tablet activated in Lily’s hands.
A list of names appeared.
Hundreds of government officials, officers, judges, corporate leaders, and intelligence personnel.
At the top of the screen, one name flashed red.
CURRENT HALCYON DIRECTOR.
Lily stopped walking.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
The name was hidden behind an encryption prompt.
A question appeared.
WHO TAUGHT THE HERO TO SEE?
Lily entered Thomas Mercer.
ACCESS DENIED.
She tried Daniel Mercer.
ACCESS DENIED.
Adrian looked back.
“Hurry.”
Lily remembered the letter.
The person who protects you may also be hiding the deepest betrayal.
She entered Rachel Mercer.
The screen unlocked.
Daniel stared at the name revealed beneath the red warning.
CURRENT HALCYON DIRECTOR:
RACHEL MERCER.
He stopped moving.
“No.”
Lily’s face went white.
“My mother is dead.”
Adrian lowered his rifle.
“That is what Thomas wanted everyone to believe.”
Daniel grabbed him.
“I buried her.”
“You buried a sealed casket.”
“I identified her belongings.”
“Placed beside another body.”
Daniel shoved Adrian against the tunnel wall.
“You knew?”
“Not until recently.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
A deep explosion shook the passage.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Adrian pushed Daniel away.
“We have less than three minutes.”
They ran.
The drainage tunnel opened near the river.
Agents climbed through the exit.
Lily emerged beside Daniel as the orchard exploded behind them.
Fire rolled above the trees.
The old house collapsed into the earth.
Emergency vehicles approached from the road.
Margaret stood beside one of them.
Her hands were not bound.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew Rachel was alive.”
Margaret’s face crumpled.
Lily stepped forward.
“Where is my mother?”
Margaret looked at the tablet.
Then at Adrian.
Then toward the river.
“I tried to protect you.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Where is Rachel?”
Margaret whispered, “She stopped being Rachel a long time ago.”
A helicopter appeared above the water.
It hovered beyond the riverbank.
The side door opened.
A woman stood inside.
Even at a distance, Daniel recognized the way she held her head.
The shape of her face.
The dark hair moving in the wind.
Lily stopped breathing.
“Mom?”
The woman raised a radio.
Lily’s emergency receiver crackled.
A voice came through.
Older than Lily remembered.
Colder than Daniel had ever known.
But unmistakable.
“Lily, do not trust Adrian.”
Adrian lifted his rifle toward the helicopter.
Margaret screamed.
Daniel pulled Lily behind a rescue vehicle.
The woman continued speaking through the radio.
“Your grandfather lied about why the Sparrow Committee was created.”
Lily held the receiver with shaking hands.
“Are you Rachel Mercer?”
A long silence followed.
Then the woman answered.
“I was.”
The helicopter began moving away.
Daniel reached for the radio.
“Rachel!”
Her voice cut through the static.
“Daniel, the tunnel attack was not meant to kill Lily.”
“Then what was it meant to do?”
“To make the nation trust her.”
Lily stared at the helicopter.
“Why?”
“Because only a national hero can enter the place Thomas built beneath the capital.”
The signal weakened.
Daniel shouted into the radio.
“What place?”
Rachel’s final words came through broken static.
“The place where the real Halcyon director is waiting.”
The transmission ended.
The helicopter disappeared beyond the river.
Lily looked down at the tablet.
The list of operatives vanished.
A new countdown appeared.
71 HOURS, 59 MINUTES, 48 SECONDS.
Beneath it was a message.
NATIONAL MEDAL CEREMONY: CAPITAL CITY.
ARCHIVE TRANSFER WILL BEGIN WHEN THE HERO ARRIVES.
Daniel took the tablet from her.
“You are not going.”
Lily looked toward the distant lights of the city.
Somewhere beyond them stood the capital, the medal ceremony, the hidden facility, and a mother who had allowed her own family to believe she was dead for twelve years.
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a photograph.
It showed Owen tied to a chair inside a windowless room.
Behind him stood a digital clock displaying the same seventy-two-hour countdown.
A message appeared beneath the image.
COME TO THE CEREMONY ALONE, OR YOUR COUSIN DIES.
Lily showed Daniel.
His face hardened.
“No.”
“We can’t leave him.”
“This is exactly what they want.”
“I know.”
“Then we find another way.”
Lily looked at Adrian.
“Is there another way into the capital facility?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
That hesitation told her enough.
“There is,” she said.
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“There was one.”
“What happened to it?”
“Thomas sealed it after Rachel escaped.”
Lily looked at the medal invitation waiting on her phone.
The country believed she was traveling to the capital to be honored.
Halcyon believed she was coming to unlock an archive.
Rachel believed Lily was part of a plan that had begun before she could walk.
And someone inside the capital was holding Owen as leverage.
Lily closed the photograph.
For the first time since the tunnel rescue, fear disappeared from her expression.
Something colder replaced it.
“Tell the government I accept the medal.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Lily.”
She looked toward the burning orchard.
“But we’re not going to the capital for a ceremony.”
The countdown continued.
71 HOURS, 57 MINUTES, 11 SECONDS.
Far away, beneath a building no public map acknowledged, a steel chamber detected Lily’s acceptance.
Ancient systems activated.
Locked doors opened.
A man sitting alone in the darkness raised his head as her image appeared on a monitor.
He was older now.
His hair had turned white.
But his eyes were the same eyes Lily saw whenever she looked into a mirror.
Thomas Mercer smiled.
“At last,” he whispered.
May you like
Then another figure stepped from the shadows behind him.
A figure wearing Daniel’s face.
