Chapter 14 - The Door Beneath the Orchard

Thomas’s old house had remained empty since Margaret sold the property after his death.

The building stood outside the city beside an abandoned apple orchard.

A development corporation had purchased the land but never demolished the house.

Daniel, Lily, Naomi, and a federal protection team arrived shortly before sunset.

Lily had been discharged from the hospital against Daniel’s preference. She wore her arm in a sling and moved carefully.

“You should be resting,” he said.

“You wouldn’t find the door without me.”

“I could carry you back to the car.”

“You could try.”

Naomi smiled.

Daniel did not.

The house smelled of dust and damp wood.

Most of the furniture was gone.

Lily stood in the entrance hall, eyes closed.

“What do you remember?” Naomi asked.

“Grandpa carried me because I was sleepy.”

“How old were you?”

“Maybe three.”

“Are you sure this happened?”

Lily opened her eyes.

“I remember the song.”

She hummed the music box melody.

Then she walked toward the kitchen.

A basement door stood behind a pantry cabinet.

The stairs descended into darkness.

Federal agents searched first.

No immediate danger was found.

At the bottom, Lily turned left.

A brick wall blocked the corridor.

“There used to be a green door.”

Daniel examined the bricks.

“They renovated.”

“No. It’s behind this.”

An agent used a scanner.

The wall was hollow.

They removed the newer bricks and revealed a steel door painted dark green.

The symbol Lily had drawn was engraved beside the lock.

A rectangle divided by three lines.

Daniel inserted Thomas’s brass key.

It fit.

The door opened.

A narrow passage led beneath the orchard.

Lights activated automatically.

They entered a circular underground room filled with obsolete computers, radio equipment, maps, and recording devices.

At the center stood a wooden desk.

A video monitor turned on.

Thomas appeared.

Older than in the previous recording.

Alive after his supposed death.

“Hello, Lily,” he said.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

Thomas looked directly into the camera as if he could see them.

“If you are watching this, then you became exactly what I believed you would become.”

Lily stood motionless.

“A person the country trusts.”

The recording continued.

“Trust is the only key powerful enough to open what I left behind.”

Daniel moved closer to the screen.

Thomas’s expression became grave.

“Halcyon began as an intelligence project. We monitored infrastructure threats, corruption networks, and foreign interference. We believed secrecy allowed us to protect people more efficiently than governments could.”

Naomi whispered, “A private surveillance state.”

“We were wrong,” Thomas said in the recording. “Power without oversight does not remain noble. It feeds itself.”

Images appeared behind him.

Politicians.

Executives.

Judges.

Police officials.

Military officers.

Media owners.

“Halcyon became an invisible government. When I attempted to dismantle it, its directors removed me.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Removed you how?” he whispered.

Thomas continued as if answering him.

“My death allowed me to work unseen. But it also required sacrifices I can never justify.”

A photograph of Rachel appeared.

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“I did not order Rachel’s death. But my deception placed her in danger. For that, Daniel, I am responsible.”

Daniel turned away from the screen.

Lily watched her grandfather.

“The active operative list is hidden in this facility,” Thomas said. “But releasing it carelessly could collapse essential institutions and endanger innocent people. Lily must decide whom to trust.”

A compartment opened beneath the desk.

Inside was a small metal case.

Daniel approached it.

The case required a fingerprint.

Lily placed her hand on the scanner.

The lock opened.

Inside was a tablet and a sealed envelope.

The envelope read:

FOR LILY ALONE.

Daniel looked at her.

“You do not have to open it.”

“Yes, I do.”

She unfolded the letter.

My brave girl,

By the time you read this, people will call you a hero.

Do not believe that courage makes you invincible.

Do not believe applause makes people loyal.

The person who abandoned you may return with tears.

The person who praises you may be preparing to use you.

The person who protects you may also be hiding the deepest betrayal.

The operative list has been divided into two parts.

One is stored on the tablet.

The other is carried by the person who rescued me from Halcyon twelve years ago.

You know this person.

You have always known this person.

Lily stopped reading.

Daniel watched her face.

“What does it say?”

She handed him the letter.

Before he reached the final lines, the facility lights turned red.

An alarm began ringing.

One of the federal agents checked his radio.

“We have movement outside.”

“How many?” Naomi asked.

“Multiple vehicles approaching through the orchard.”

Daniel looked at the monitor.

Thomas’s recorded image had disappeared.

A live video feed replaced it.

A convoy of black SUVs surrounded the house.

Armed figures moved between the trees.

Then the camera switched to another location.

Margaret sat inside a vehicle with her hands bound.

A masked person held a weapon beside her.

A distorted voice filled the room.

“Bring us the tablet, or Margaret Mercer dies.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Lily’s expression remained unreadable.

Naomi whispered, “It’s a trap.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Margaret had abandoned her.

Betrayed her route.

Protected Scott.

Helped hide crimes that killed Rachel and nearly killed thousands.

Yet Lily still watched the screen as if the decision mattered.

The distorted voice returned.

“You have ten minutes.”

Lily picked up the tablet.

Daniel caught her hand.

“No.”

“She might die.”

“She gave them your bus route.”

“She said she didn’t know.”

“And you believe her?”

Lily looked at him.

“I believe she’s still hiding something.”

Daniel glanced at the live feed.

“What?”

Lily pointed toward Margaret’s bound hands.

“She’s tapping.”

Naomi leaned closer.

Margaret’s fingers moved against the seat.

Three short taps.

Three long taps.

Three short taps.

SOS.

Then another sequence.

Lily translated it aloud.

“Don’t trust…”

Margaret’s fingers moved again.

Daniel held his breath.

Lily’s face changed.

“Don’t trust Naomi.”

May you like

Everyone turned.

Naomi was already holding a gun.
