Chapter 12 - The Woman With Rachel’s Face

Doctors stabilized Lily within minutes.
The transmitter had disrupted the monitor but had not directly affected her heart.
Its purpose had been psychological.
Someone wanted Daniel to believe his daughter was dying.
Federal agents removed the device.
Hospital officials insisted no unauthorized person had entered the room.
Daniel no longer trusted their records.
Naomi obtained a list of temporary hospital employees hired during the emergency.
One name appeared without a verified address.
Elena Ward.
Security footage showed a woman wearing a surgical mask entering Lily’s room during a shift change.
The upper half of her face resembled Rachel.
Daniel watched the footage repeatedly.
“It could be anyone.”
Naomi paused the image.
“She knew where the cameras were.”
“Lily said she saw her inside the tunnel.”
“Then she was not a hospital opportunist. She was part of the operation.”
Daniel enlarged the badge visible on the woman’s chest.
It did not belong to the hospital.
The emblem showed a silver bird surrounded by a circle.
Naomi’s expression changed.
“What?”
“I have seen that symbol.”
“Where?”
“In Thomas’s storage unit.”
They returned under federal protection.
Most of the unit had been damaged, but the wall of photographs remained.
Near the lower corner, a picture showed Thomas standing beside five people in front of an old railway control center.
One woman wore the silver bird emblem.
Her name was written on the back.
Dr. Helena Ward.
Naomi searched archived records.
Helena Ward had been a materials scientist employed by Halcyon fifteen years earlier.
She had disappeared shortly after raising concerns about defective reinforcement composites.
Her death was never confirmed.
Daniel studied the photograph.
Helena resembled Rachel.
Not exactly.
But enough to explain Lily’s reaction.
A note in Thomas’s handwriting appeared beneath the photograph.
WARD KNOWS THE FORMULA WAS ALTERED.
“She helped design the material,” Naomi said.
“And Halcyon changed it?”
“Probably substituted cheaper components.”
Daniel examined the other people in the photograph.
Thomas.
Helena.
Adrian Cross.
Malcolm Voss.
And a fifth person whose face had been scratched away.
Naomi pointed at the damaged area.
“Someone did not want this person identified.”
Daniel turned the photo over.
A message had been written on the back.
THE SIXTH MEMBER WAS NEVER PHOTOGRAPHED.
“Sixth member?” Daniel asked.
Naomi opened a nearby folder.
Inside were references to something called the Sparrow Committee.
It appeared to be an internal group formed by Halcyon employees who had discovered criminal practices.
Thomas had been part of it.
So had Helena and Adrian.
“They were whistleblowers,” Naomi said.
“Then why is Adrian accused of planting the explosives?”
“Perhaps he was framed.”
“Or perhaps the committee split apart.”
Daniel found another note.
If Sparrow fails, the child becomes the archive.
He stared at it.
“What child?”
Naomi looked toward him.
“Lily.”
“That makes no sense. She was a baby when Dad wrote this.”
“Maybe Thomas hid information in something belonging to her.”
“The music box.”
“Adrian took it from the apartment.”
“And said he worked for my father.”
Daniel remembered the fire, the warning photograph, and Adrian’s strange statement in the tunnel.
His instructions did not end with him.
“What if Adrian didn’t steal the music box to destroy the evidence?” Daniel said. “What if he was protecting it?”
“Then why start the fire?”
“He said he was told the apartment would be empty.”
Naomi’s phone vibrated.
She read a new message.
Her face went pale.
“What?”
“A reporter received a package.”
“From whom?”
“No return address.”
The package contained Lily’s wooden music box.
It had been missing for seven years.
The reporter delivered it to federal investigators.
Daniel demanded to be present when they opened it.
The original flash drive was gone.
Inside the rotating bird mechanism, technicians discovered a microscopic film strip containing encrypted symbols.
The pattern did not match any known code.
Lily was shown a photograph.
She studied it for several minutes.
“It’s not a code,” she said.
“What is it?” Daniel asked.
“Music.”
The symbols represented notes, timing intervals, and mechanical positions.
They corresponded to the melody played by the music box.
When the melody was converted into numbers, it produced a sequence of coordinates.
The coordinates led to an abandoned reservoir outside the city.
Federal agents searched the location.
Beneath a maintenance platform, they found a sealed chamber.
Inside were original Halcyon records, material samples, payment ledgers, and recordings documenting years of corruption.
It was enough to destroy the company.
It was enough to send Scott, city officials, inspectors, and executives to prison.
But the chamber also contained one recent object.
A photograph taken three weeks earlier.
It showed Lily boarding her school bus.
