Chapter 4 - Daniel's Dead Man Protocol)

Vivienne and Ethan retreated through the service passage before anyone entered Sebastian's office.

She knew one place in the mansion Sebastian rarely visited.

Daniel's old study.

After his death, Vivienne had closed it.

Not because she wanted to erase him.

Because opening the door hurt too much.

Sebastian had encouraged her decision.

Now she understood why.

They entered through the hidden wall.

Dust rested on the desk.

Daniel's books remained exactly where he had left them.

A photograph of Ethan at two years old stood beside the lamp.

Vivienne touched the frame.

For four years she had believed Daniel had left her nothing except memories.

Now every object in the room looked like a message she had failed to read.

Ethan placed the compass on the desk.

"What do we do?"

Vivienne examined it.

Old brass.

Scratched lid.

A compass needle.

Nothing unusual.

Then she remembered Daniel refusing to let anyone repair it.

"It isn't broken," he had once said.

"It points badly," she had replied.

"It points where I need it to."

At the time she had laughed.

Vivienne turned the compass over.

Tiny letters had been engraved near the hinge.

E H.

Ethan Hale.

Not Daniel's initials.

Their son's.

"When did Dad put my name there?"

"I don't know."

She pressed the hinge.

Nothing.

Ethan touched the compass needle.

It spun.

Then stopped.

Not north.

West.

Toward Daniel's bookshelf.

Vivienne stared.

She rotated the compass.

The needle still pointed toward the same shelf.

Not magnetic north.

A hidden magnet.

Vivienne walked toward the books.

The needle shifted toward one particular volume.

A leather bound atlas.

She removed it.

Behind it was a circular brass plate.

Exactly the size of the compass.

Vivienne pressed the compass against it.

Click.

A section of the bookshelf unlocked.

Ethan whispered, "Whoa."

Vivienne pulled.

The shelf opened like a narrow door.

Behind it sat a small terminal.

Black screen.

No keyboard.

One card slot.

Vivienne looked at the memory card.

Daniel had built the system so that two physical objects were required.

The compass.

And the card.

Ethan had accidentally found both.

She inserted the card.

The terminal lit up.

A message appeared.

ENTER AUTHORIZATION.

Vivienne stared.

"What authorization?"

Ethan touched the compass.

The lid had opened.

Inside, beneath the needle, tiny numbers were engraved.

Their wedding anniversary.

Vivienne entered them.

The terminal unlocked.

Folders appeared.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Audio files.

Video files.

Photographs.

Hundreds of documents.

At the top sat a folder named V.

Vivienne opened it.

A video began.

Daniel appeared on screen.

Vivienne covered her mouth.

He was sitting in this exact study.

Alive.

Tired.

Terrified.

"If you're watching this, something happened to me."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Dad."

Daniel continued.

"Vivienne, I hope you never see this. I hope I'm wrong about Sebastian."

Vivienne's eyes filled.

"But if I'm not, you need to know that Hale Meridian has been compromised from inside."

Daniel explained everything.

For nearly twelve minutes, he described financial transfers Sebastian had authorized through shell companies.

Construction projects billed twice.

Government contracts manipulated.

Money routed through offshore accounts.

But the fraud was not what made Vivienne cold.

Daniel had discovered payments to a private intelligence firm.

Payments for surveillance.

Threats.

Blackmail.

And what he called problem resolution.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Sebastian has built a system around himself. Drivers, consultants, accountants, security contractors. He no longer thinks laws apply to him."

Ethan held Vivienne's hand.

Daniel continued.

"Three days ago, I confronted him."

The video changed.

Security footage.

Daniel and Sebastian in an underground parking garage.

Sebastian's voice was clear.

"You think you're protecting Vivienne by doing this?"

Daniel answered.

"I'm protecting everyone you've been stealing from."

"You expose me and Hale Meridian collapses."

"Then it collapses."

Sebastian moved closer.

"What happens to Ethan?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"Do not say my son's name."

"I'm asking what happens to him when his parents lose everything."

"You stay away from my family."

Sebastian smiled.

"You really believe you still control this?"

The footage ended.

Vivienne felt sick.

More files followed.

Recorded calls.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Then another video.

Daniel on his boat.

Date stamped the morning he died.

"If I don't return today, there is one man you should not trust."

Vivienne knew the answer before Daniel said it.

"Sebastian Vale."

Ethan began to cry silently.

Vivienne pulled him against her.

Daniel continued.

"The evidence will be distributed automatically if the compass and card are authenticated together."

Vivienne looked at the terminal.

A timer appeared.

23:41:16.

Twenty three hours.

Forty one minutes.

Daniel continued speaking.

"I couldn't send it immediately. Some innocent employees would be exposed with the guilty ones. The final protocol gives you time to choose what goes public and what goes only to authorities."

Vivienne wiped her tears.

"That's why he needed me."

She suddenly understood.

Sebastian had not entered her life after Daniel's death only because he wanted her.

He needed access.

To the mansion.

To Daniel's systems.

To the company.

And perhaps eventually to the compass.

Ethan asked, "Can we send it now?"

Vivienne looked at the timer.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because Sebastian may have people inside the police, inside the company, maybe even inside our security."

She opened a directory labeled TRUSTED CONTACTS.

Three names appeared.

One was dead.

One she did not recognize.

The third made her heart jump.

Margaret Cole.

Daniel's former attorney.

Vivienne had not spoken to Margaret in three years.

Sebastian had told her Margaret retired because of illness.

Vivienne clicked the contact file.

An address appeared.

Not far from the city.

Beside it was a note.

If the protocol is activated, trust Margaret before anyone else.

Vivienne reached for the study phone.

Dead.

Ethan looked toward the service passage.

"We can sneak out."

"Maybe."

"Through the kitchen?"

"No. Sebastian will expect that."

"Garage?"

"Locked during security shutdown."

Ethan thought.

Then his eyes brightened.

"Dad's tunnel."

Vivienne frowned.

"What tunnel?"

"The one behind the greenhouse."

She stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan shrugged.

"Dad showed me when I was little."

"You were three."

"I remember."

Vivienne nearly laughed from disbelief.

Daniel had apparently hidden half the house from her.

"Where does it go?"

"Outside."

"Where outside?"

"The trees."

Vivienne shut down the terminal.

The timer remained.

23:37:02.

She removed the memory card.

Then she hesitated.

If Sebastian found the terminal, he could destroy it.

Unless Daniel had built redundancy.

She checked the directories.

At the bottom was another folder.

AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL COPY.

Status.

PENDING.

Destination.

Three encrypted servers.

Vivienne smiled for the first time.

Daniel had prepared for destruction.

Sebastian had spent four years trying to find one system.

He had missed the others.

She placed the memory card in her pocket.

"Let's go."

They reached the hidden passage.

Then Ethan stopped.

"What?"

He pointed to the desk.

A red light had appeared beneath the terminal.

Vivienne turned.

An alert flashed.

REMOTE ACCESS ATTEMPT.

Someone had found the system.

The attempt failed.

Then another started.

REMOTE ACCESS ATTEMPT.

Sebastian.

Vivienne grabbed the compass.

"We move now."

A heavy sound came from the study door.

Someone was trying to break through.

Vivienne and Ethan entered the passage.

The door splintered behind them.

They ran.

At the far end of the passage, Ethan suddenly stopped.

A man stood in the darkness ahead.

Marcus.

May you like

He smiled.

"You really should have stayed in the library."
