Chapter 10 - The First Pancake)

Sebastian entered through the front door alone.

That worried Vivienne more than if he had brought six men with him.

Thomas stood near the kitchen entrance.

Margaret remained beside Ethan.

Vivienne sat at the old table with Daniel's document case in front of her.

Sebastian looked around.

Recognition passed across his face.

"So this is where he hid it."

Vivienne smiled.

"You never knew about the house."

"No."

"Daniel was smarter than you."

Sebastian's jaw tightened.

"He was sentimental."

"Apparently that was enough."

Sebastian took one step closer.

Thomas moved.

Sebastian stopped.

"I'm not here to fight."

Thomas laughed.

"You've had four years to try something new."

Sebastian ignored him.

He looked at Vivienne.

"Open the case."

"No."

"Whatever Daniel told you, he didn't know the full situation."

"He knew enough."

"He knew what he wanted to believe."

"You murdered him."

Sebastian looked toward Ethan.

Vivienne stood immediately.

"Look at me."

Sebastian did.

"Never use my son to avoid answering me again."

His expression hardened.

"I did not push Daniel into the water."

Thomas said, "I saw you attack him."

"You saw Marcus attack you."

"I saw Daniel fighting you."

"Because Daniel struck me first."

Vivienne stared.

Sebastian continued.

"He had a gun."

Margaret frowned.

"Daniel hated guns."

"He was afraid."

Thomas said, "You're lying."

Sebastian looked at him.

"You were already in the water."

Thomas moved forward.

Vivienne stopped him.

"Let him talk."

Sebastian nodded.

"Daniel asked me to meet him. He planned to force a confession."

"By threatening you?"

"Yes."

Vivienne did not believe him.

But she listened.

"He pulled a gun. Marcus reacted. Thomas intervened. Everyone panicked."

"What happened to Daniel?"

Sebastian's eyes shifted.

"He fell."

"Into the water?"

"Yes."

"And you left him."

"He was alive when I left."

Thomas shouted.

"Liar."

Sebastian raised his voice for the first time.

"I did not kill him."

The silence afterward was heavy.

Vivienne watched his face.

Sebastian believed something about his own version.

Maybe not innocence.

But distinction.

As if failing to save Daniel was morally separate from causing his death.

"Then why hide everything?"

"Because Thomas would have accused me."

"You paid Pike."

"To keep an unstable addict from destroying the company."

"You altered evidence."

"To protect eighteen thousand employees."

"You hunted Thomas."

"Because he was blackmailing me."

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"Blackmail?"

Sebastian looked at Vivienne.

"He demanded five million dollars six months after Daniel died."

Vivienne turned to Thomas.

His face changed.

"Is that true?"

Thomas looked down.

"Yes."

Margaret closed her eyes.

Vivienne stared at him.

"You demanded money?"

"I was using again."

"So Sebastian paid you?"

"No."

"I refused," Sebastian said. "He disappeared."

Thomas looked at Vivienne.

"I hated myself."

"Did you threaten to expose what happened?"

"Yes."

"And when he refused to pay?"

"I ran."

Vivienne absorbed it.

Nobody in the room except Ethan was completely innocent.

Daniel had hidden truths.

Margaret had warned Sebastian.

Thomas had tried to profit from his brother's death.

Sebastian had used every weakness.

That was how predators survived.

They rarely created every flaw around them.

They found existing cracks and widened them.

Sebastian saw her hesitation.

"Now you understand."

"No."

His expression changed.

"You think everyone being imperfect makes you less guilty."

"I think Daniel's story is incomplete."

"Then let's complete it."

Vivienne opened the document case.

Sebastian stared.

She removed the voice recorder.

"I haven't listened to this."

Thomas stepped closer.

Margaret did too.

Vivienne pressed play.

Static.

Then Daniel's voice.

"August seventeenth. Recording begins at 2:14 p.m."

Sebastian's face drained.

The recording continued.

Wind.

Water.

Then voices.

Daniel.

Sebastian.

"You moved another fourteen million."

"It was temporary."

"Into Pike's network?"

Silence.

"Daniel, turn that off."

"No."

"You're making a mistake."

"I'm documenting the conversation."

Then Thomas's voice.

"Dan, there's another boat."

Marcus.

Shouting.

Movement.

The sound of impact.

Thomas yelling.

A splash.

Daniel breathing hard.

Sebastian shouting.

Then Daniel said clearly.

"Get off my boat."

Sebastian answered.

"Give me the archive."

"No."

"You don't understand what happens if this becomes public."

"I understand exactly."

Another struggle.

Then Sebastian said words none of them expected.

"Marcus, stop."

A second voice.

Marcus.

"He knows everything."

"I said stop."

Daniel shouted.

A loud impact followed.

Then water.

For several seconds, only wind.

Sebastian's voice.

"Daniel."

No answer.

"Daniel."

Marcus said, "He's gone."

Sebastian sounded panicked.

"Get him."

"Forget it."

"Get him out."

"He's under the boat."

"Marcus."

"We need to leave."

"I said get him."

The recording ended.

Everyone stood still.

Vivienne looked at Sebastian.

His face was white.

"You didn't push him."

Sebastian swallowed.

"No."

"But Marcus did."

"Yes."

"And you covered it up."

Sebastian said nothing.

"You paid Pike."

Silence.

"You let me believe Daniel died in an accident."

His voice became quieter.

"I was terrified."

Vivienne stared at him.

"And then you moved into my house."

"I loved you."

Thomas cursed.

Vivienne almost struck Sebastian again.

Instead she laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the sentence was obscene.

"You loved me?"

"I did."

"You watched me mourn the man whose death you concealed."

"I didn't order Marcus to kill him."

"You protected Marcus."

"I protected the company."

"You protected yourself."

Sebastian's eyes filled with frustration.

"I was trying to survive."

Vivienne looked at Ethan.

Then back at Sebastian.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The only person you've ever protected."

Sebastian stepped toward the table.

"Give me the recorder."

Vivienne took out her phone.

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

She opened the remote archive interface Margaret had helped configure during the drive.

A prompt appeared.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION.

Public release.

Legal separation.

Vivienne selected legal separation.

The system asked for the phrase.

Sebastian realized what she was doing.

"No."

Vivienne typed.

ONLY THE FIRST ONE.

Sebastian lunged.

Thomas intercepted him.

Both men hit the kitchen wall.

Vivienne pressed authorize.

The screen flashed.

TRANSFER INITIATED.

Sebastian froze.

"What did you do?"

Vivienne looked at him.

"What Daniel asked me to do."

The timer disappeared.

In its place came three confirmations.

Federal prosecution archive received.

Independent legal counsel received.

Protected investigative press archive received.

Sebastian stared at the screen.

Then slowly sat in Daniel's old kitchen chair.

For the first time since Vivienne had known him, Sebastian Vale had no strategy.

No threat.

No smile.

No control.

May you like

Only fear.

And the night was not over yet.
