Chapter 3 - Behind the Bedroom Wall)

The service passage opened behind a decorative panel inside Vivienne's dressing room.

She pushed it cautiously.

The bedroom was empty.

The massive bed remained perfectly made.

Her shoes were lined beneath the wardrobe.

The curtains were closed.

Nothing looked disturbed.

That frightened her.

People who wanted to search a house without being noticed rarely left visible damage.

Vivienne locked the bedroom door.

"Show me."

Ethan moved toward the back of the closet.

He dropped to his knees and pushed several shoe boxes aside.

Behind them was a narrow section of wall molding.

He pressed it.

A rectangular piece shifted inward.

Vivienne stared.

She had lived in this room for eleven years.

She had never known the compartment existed.

Ethan reached inside.

His fingers came out empty.

His face changed.

"It's gone."

Vivienne crouched.

"The phone?"

He nodded.

"I put it right here."

She checked the compartment herself.

Nothing.

Only dust.

Then she noticed a cable.

Thin.

Black.

Running downward.

Vivienne followed it with her fingers.

The cable led behind the wall.

"This wasn't just a hiding place."

"What was it?"

"I don't know yet."

She took the memory card Ethan had found.

"Was this with the phone?"

"Yes."

"Inside it?"

"No. It was under the phone."

Vivienne looked around.

Daniel had designed the electrical system during the renovation.

He had insisted on redundant wiring, backup communications, private servers.

At the time, she had thought it was excessive.

Now she wondered whether some of it had been intended for something entirely different.

A noise came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Vivienne put one finger to her lips.

Ethan nodded.

Someone stopped outside.

The handle turned.

Locked.

A man's voice spoke softly.

"She's inside."

Not Sebastian.

Another man answered through what sounded like an earpiece.

Vivienne grabbed Ethan and moved into the closet.

The bedroom door suddenly clicked.

Electronic override.

Vivienne's pulse jumped.

Someone was bypassing the lock.

The door opened.

A man entered.

Tall.

Gray jacket.

Black gloves.

Vivienne recognized him.

Marcus Dane.

Sebastian's private driver.

Except no driver needed gloves inside a mansion.

Marcus walked directly toward the closet.

Vivienne searched desperately for anything she could use.

A metal shoehorn.

She grabbed it.

Marcus entered.

Vivienne swung.

The shoehorn struck his wrist.

He cursed.

She shoved Ethan behind her.

Marcus grabbed her arm.

Vivienne drove her knee into his leg, twisted free, and slammed the wardrobe door into his shoulder.

"Run, Ethan!"

The boy sprinted through the dressing room.

Marcus lunged after him.

Vivienne grabbed a marble perfume bottle and threw it.

It shattered against the wall beside Marcus.

He turned.

That moment was enough.

Vivienne pulled the hidden passage open.

"Ethan!"

The boy dove inside.

Vivienne followed and slammed the panel.

Marcus hit it from outside.

Once.

Twice.

Vivienne and Ethan ran through darkness.

Behind them, wood cracked.

"Faster."

They reached the lower passage.

Ethan was breathing hard.

"Mommy, I know where the phone might be."

Vivienne looked at him.

"Where?"

"The man took it."

"Marcus?"

"I didn't see his face before."

"Where did he take it?"

"I saw him go downstairs."

"Which stairs?"

"The little ones near Sebastian's office."

Vivienne knew exactly where Ethan meant.

A private staircase led beneath the west wing.

Officially it ended at the wine cellar.

But during renovations Daniel had converted an adjacent space into a secure records room.

Sebastian now used that section for company archives.

Vivienne had not entered it in years.

They reached a junction.

One path led toward the kitchen.

The other toward the west wing.

Vivienne chose the west wing.

Halfway there, Ethan whispered.

"Mommy."

"What?"

"Why was Dad talking to Sebastian on the phone?"

Vivienne struggled to answer.

"I don't know."

"Did Sebastian hurt Dad?"

The question cut through her.

She wanted to say no.

She could not.

"I don't know that either."

Ethan squeezed her hand.

"I think Dad was scared."

Vivienne stopped.

"What makes you say that?"

"In the video."

"What did he look like?"

"Like you do right now."

The simplicity of the answer broke something inside her.

Daniel had been afraid.

She had seen it.

She had ignored it because fear did not fit the man she knew.

A powerful man.

A wealthy man.

A man surrounded by security and influence.

But power did not make betrayal impossible.

It only made betrayal more difficult to recognize.

They reached the service door beside Sebastian's office.

Vivienne listened.

Voices.

Sebastian.

Marcus.

And a third man.

"We need the card," Sebastian said.

Marcus answered.

"She has it."

"Then get it."

"What about the boy?"

A long silence followed.

Vivienne held Ethan closer.

Then Sebastian spoke.

"No permanent harm."

Marcus laughed softly.

"You shoved him down a staircase."

"I knew she would catch him."

"You didn't know anything."

Vivienne's jaw tightened.

Sebastian continued.

"The situation changed when he found Daniel's archive."

The third man spoke.

"You told me Daniel destroyed everything."

"He was supposed to."

"Apparently he didn't."

"Then we find the backup."

Vivienne leaned closer to the wall.

Marcus asked, "And if the card copied automatically?"

Sebastian cursed.

The third man said, "Then we have a bigger problem."

"What problem?" Marcus asked.

"Daniel's dead man's protocol."

Vivienne stopped breathing.

Sebastian's voice dropped.

"That system was never activated."

"You don't know that."

"I checked."

"You checked the server."

"Yes."

"The server wasn't the trigger."

Silence.

Then Sebastian said, "What was?"

The third man answered.

"The compass."

Vivienne closed her eyes.

Daniel's brass compass.

The same compass Ethan had been looking for when he discovered the hidden compartment.

Sebastian said, "Where is it?"

Marcus replied, "Not in the bedroom."

"Find it."

Vivienne looked at Ethan.

He stared back.

Then slowly reached beneath his cardigan.

A thin leather cord hung around his neck.

At the end of it was Daniel's brass compass.

Vivienne's eyes widened.

Ethan whispered.

"I found it yesterday."

Behind the wall, Sebastian continued.

"If that compass activates the archive, we have less than twenty four hours before everything Daniel collected leaves the private network."

Marcus asked the obvious question.

"Everything about what?"

The third man answered.

"The fraud."

Sebastian said nothing.

The man continued.

"The shell companies. The diverted contracts. The falsified signatures."

Marcus lowered his voice.

"And Daniel?"

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Then Sebastian said four words.

"He should have listened."

Vivienne felt her knees weaken.

Ethan looked up at her.

He had heard it too.

Vivienne pressed her hand gently over his ears.

Too late.

Sebastian continued.

"I warned him not to go to the authorities."

The third man spoke sharply.

"You said the boat was an accident."

"It was supposed to look like one."

Vivienne's entire world narrowed to those words.

It was supposed to look like one.

She had spent four years grieving an accident.

There had been no accident.

She stared at the wall separating her from Sebastian.

A man she had trusted.

A man she had allowed into her home.

A man she had allowed near her son.

A man who had kissed her beneath the portrait of the husband he had helped kill.

Vivienne looked down at the compass.

Then at the memory card.

Daniel had left something behind.

May you like

Something Sebastian still feared after four years.

And Vivienne was going to find it.
