Chapter 15 - The Voice Waiting for Lily

Karen called the villa.
No answer.
She contacted the security network.
Access denied.
The system protecting the house had accepted a higher authority.
“Who has authority above you?” Elena demanded.
Karen looked at Arthur’s final message.
“The original Northstar ring.”
Margaret contacted the local police while the investigators rushed toward the elevator.
Daniel remained beside the monitor.
“I can stop the remote authorization.”
Karen turned.
“How?”
“The lower archive connects directly to the trust network. Arthur installed a physical shutdown beneath the central server.”
“Where?”
Daniel pointed toward a steel door.
The compass symbol was engraved above it.
Karen, Elena, and Daniel entered while the investigators headed toward the villa.
Beyond the door stood a massive circular server surrounded by cables and cooling pipes.
A countdown appeared on the central screen.
AUTHORIZATION WINDOW: 06:42
Elena stared at it.
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
Daniel examined the console.
“Northstar transfers voting control to whoever holds the original ring.”
“Can Lily authorize it accidentally?”
“She has to repeat a spoken phrase and provide a voice sample.”
Karen remembered Arthur’s warning.
Do not trust anyone who asks her to sign, speak, record, or repeat a sequence of numbers.
The live feed returned on a small monitor.
Lily sat very still.
The figure behind the sofa remained outside the camera angle.
A distorted voice spoke through the villa’s speakers.
“Lily, your grandmother needs your help.”
Lily looked toward the ceiling camera.
“Where is she?”
“She is trapped. You can open the doors.”
“How?”
“Repeat the numbers on the screen.”
A sequence appeared on the living room television.
Lily stared at it.
Karen pressed the communication button.
“Lily, don’t say anything.”
No sound left the archive.
Daniel checked the connection.
“The original ring blocked us.”
On the screen, Lily reached toward the silver recorder Karen had repaired for her.
The hidden figure stepped closer.
“Do not touch that,” the voice ordered.
Lily pulled her hand back.
Elena whispered, “She’s frightened.”
Karen watched her granddaughter’s face.
Lily looked toward the unconscious officer.
Then she looked at the black ring on the table.
“You said Grandma needs me.”
“Yes.”
“Grandma never asks me to repeat secrets.”
The figure paused.
Lily continued.
“She says secrets that hurt people should be recorded.”
She grabbed the recorder and pressed the button.
The figure moved into view.
Karen’s breath stopped.
The man wore a dark coat. His hair was white. His face carried the same sharp features as Arthur Westbrook.
But he was not Arthur.
Karen had seen him only in old photographs.
Victor Westbrook looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Karen.”
Elena stepped backward.
“He’s alive.”
Victor smiled.
“Your granddaughter is much smarter than Julian.”
Karen pressed every control on the console.
Nothing opened the communication line.
Victor sat across from Lily.
“I knew your grandfather.”
Lily held the recorder.
“Grandpa is dead.”
Victor’s smile weakened.
“That is what your family told you.”
Karen stared at the screen.
Victor continued.
“Repeat the sequence, Lily, and I will tell you where Arthur is.”
Karen gripped the edge of the console.
Arthur was alive.
Or Victor wanted them to believe he was.
Lily looked at the numbers.
The countdown reached four minutes.
Daniel opened a panel beneath the server.
“There are three shutdown switches.”
“Which one?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
“If I choose incorrectly, the trust may transfer automatically.”
Elena moved beside him.
“What did Arthur mean when he said the second answer was beneath the company?”
“The server.”
“And the third was buried beneath his name.”
Karen looked at the circular machine.
Arthur’s full legal name was engraved on the base.
ARTHUR JAMES WESTBROOK.
Beneath the metal letters was a narrow keyhole.
Karen removed the brass key Daniel had taken from the passage.
It fit.
She turned it.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was the original Northstar ring.
Daniel stared at it.
“That’s impossible. Victor has it.”
Karen looked toward the live feed.
The ring on the table beside Lily was a copy.
Victor had never possessed the original authority.
He needed Lily to activate the trust because the real ring remained hidden beneath Arthur’s name.
Karen placed the ring into the console.
The countdown stopped.
Every screen changed.
ORIGINAL AUTHORITY RESTORED.
At the villa, the security doors unlocked.
The police entered through the front gate.
Victor heard them.
His calm expression disappeared.
He grabbed Lily’s recorder and ran toward the library.
Lily moved away from him and hid behind the sofa.
The live feed changed to the library camera.
Victor opened the passage.
Before disappearing, he looked directly into the camera.
“You found the ring,” he said. “But you still haven’t found Arthur.”
Then he entered the darkness.
Police reached Lily seconds later.
Elena began crying with relief.
Karen closed her eyes.
The Northstar Trust remained under her control.
Julian was imprisoned.
Daniel had agreed to testify and surrender every remaining account.
Elena’s money, company shares, and legal authority had been restored.
The villa belonged to Lily’s trust, exactly as Karen had intended.
For the first time in eighteen months, Elena and Lily could return home without asking Julian’s permission.
It should have felt like victory.
In many ways, it was.
Two weeks later, Julian accepted a cooperation agreement in exchange for revealing the financial advisers who had assisted Graybridge. Daniel faced prosecution, but his testimony recovered most of the missing eleven million dollars.
Doctor Halden lost his medical license after investigators discovered payments from Julian’s private account.
The relatives who had watched Lily cry without intervening were removed from every family trust committee. Some apologized. Others blamed Julian.
Karen accepted neither excuses nor sudden loyalty.
Elena filed for divorce and restored her original surname.
She chose to remain in the villa, but every room Julian had controlled was changed. His office became a library for Lily. The security cameras inside the bedrooms were removed. The white sofa where he had once sat like a king was donated.
On the first quiet evening after the scandal, Karen, Elena, and Lily ate dinner beside the large windows.
No relatives watched them.
No phones were checked.
No one asked permission to speak.
Lily placed the silver recorder beside her plate.
“Are we finished?” she asked.
Elena smiled.
“With Julian, yes.”
Lily looked at Karen.
“But not with Victor.”
Karen did not lie.
“No.”
“And Grandpa?”
“We don’t know.”
Lily pressed the recorder.
“I found something.”
Karen looked at the device.
“What?”
“When Victor took it, he recorded himself inside the passage.”
She played the final file.
Footsteps echoed through the underground tunnel.
Victor was breathing heavily.
Then he made a phone call.
A second man answered.
“You failed,” the man said.
Victor replied, “Karen found the original ring.”
“Then Arthur was right to hide it from you.”
Karen stopped breathing.
The second voice was older, tired, and unmistakable.
Arthur.
Victor whispered, “She thinks you’re a prisoner.”
Arthur answered, “Let her.”
A door opened in the recording.
Before the file ended, Arthur spoke one final sentence.
“Bring Lily to me before Karen discovers why the Northstar Trust was really created.”
The recorder fell silent.
Elena stared at her mother.
Lily waited for an explanation.
Karen looked toward the dark windows.
Outside the villa, the front gate opened by itself.
The security system announced that an authorized family member had entered the property.
On the driveway camera, a black car moved slowly toward the house.
The biometric record identified its passenger with a name that had officially belonged to a dead man for five years.
Arthur James Westbrook.
The car stopped outside the front doors.
May you like
Someone stepped out.
But before the camera could capture his face, every screen in the villa went black.
