Chapter 14 - Beneath the Company They Built

The original headquarters of Westbrook Holdings had been abandoned for twelve years.

The modern offices stood in the financial district, covered in glass and steel. The original building remained near the river, a silent warehouse of red brick and boarded windows.

Karen arrived with Elena, Margaret, two investigators, and a secured Daniel.

Lily stayed behind with a trusted protection officer.

Karen did not want her granddaughter anywhere near another hidden passage.

The entrance to the lower archive was concealed beneath an old freight elevator.

Arthur’s ledger contained the code.

The elevator descended farther than the building plans showed.

When the doors opened, a row of lights activated automatically.

The underground level contained filing cabinets, computers, and storage boxes marked with dates stretching back thirty years.

Elena walked beside her mother.

“Dad built all of this?”

“He must have.”

“Without telling you.”

Karen did not answer.

At the center of the archive stood a metal table.

A sealed envelope rested on it.

KAREN was written across the front.

Daniel stopped.

“That wasn’t here the last time.”

“When were you here?” an investigator asked.

“Five years ago.”

Karen opened the envelope.

Inside was a memory card and a note.

You defeated the thief you could see.

Now decide whether you are prepared to meet the one you could not.

A monitor on the table turned on.

Arthur appeared on the screen.

The recording had been made inside the underground archive.

He looked tired but alive.

“Karen,” he began, “if this message has activated, Julian’s access has been revoked and the original deed has been recognized by the security network.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

“First, I owe you an apology that no recording can repair. I used my death to conceal an investigation. I believed secrecy would protect you. Instead, it gave others the opportunity to use my silence against our family.”

Karen stood rigidly.

Arthur continued.

“Daniel agreed to help me, but fear changed him. He began protecting the operation instead of protecting the people it was meant to save.”

Daniel looked down.

“Julian was recruited through Graybridge. He believed he was stealing Westbrook Holdings. In truth, he was being used to unlock an older asset hidden beneath the company.”

The screen displayed a diagram.

Westbrook Holdings owned land, patents, and investments.

Beneath those visible assets was a forgotten voting trust created by Arthur’s father.

Whoever controlled it could influence several corporations far larger than Westbrook Holdings.

Elena stared at the numbers.

“This is worth billions.”

Karen read the original trust name.

THE WESTBROOK NORTHSTAR TRUST.

Northstar had not been Victor’s company first.

It had been the family’s hidden foundation.

Arthur spoke again.

“Victor believed the Northstar Trust was his inheritance. Our father removed him after discovering he planned to sell its voting rights to outside investors.”

“Is Victor alive?” Karen whispered toward the screen.

As though answering, Arthur said, “I cannot confirm whether Victor survived the crash. I can confirm that someone has used his identity for decades.”

The recording changed.

Security footage appeared from the hospital where Arthur had supposedly died.

A man wearing a medical coat entered Arthur’s room.

His face remained hidden.

On one hand was a black ring bearing the compass symbol.

“The ring identifies Northstar’s inner group,” Arthur explained. “Julian received his from Daniel. Daniel received his from me. Mine came from my father.”

Daniel looked toward Karen.

“I never knew Julian’s ring contained a chip.”

Arthur continued.

“The person leading Northstar possesses the original ring. The chip within it can authorize control of the hidden trust.”

Karen looked at Julian’s ring inside the evidence bag.

“His is only a copy,” Margaret said.

The monitor displayed a final file.

AUTHORIZATION STATUS: PENDING LILY WESTBROOK VALE.

Elena stepped forward.

“Why is Lily’s name there?”

Arthur’s expression softened.

“Because Northstar cannot be activated by Karen, Elena, Julian, Daniel, or me. My father designed the final authorization to pass to the youngest direct descendant after her eighth birthday.”

Lily had turned eight two months earlier.

Julian had begun accelerating his theft immediately afterward.

Karen understood.

He had never needed Lily’s trust fund.

He needed access to Lily herself.

Arthur’s recording reached its end.

“Karen, protect Lily. Do not trust anyone who asks her to sign, speak, record, or repeat a sequence of numbers. The final key is not a document.”

The screen went black.

Every light in the archive shut off.

A mechanical voice spoke from the darkness.

“Biometric successor detected.”

Elena reached for Karen.

A second message followed.

“Remote authorization initiated.”

Karen activated her phone.

The screen showed a live camera feed from the villa.

Lily was sitting in the living room.

The protection officer lay unconscious near the door.

A figure stood behind Lily’s sofa.

The person leaned toward her and placed a black ring on the table.
