Chapter 11 - The House Beside the Lake

The next morning, Elena stood outside the district attorney’s office while Julian was formally charged.

Reporters crowded the steps.

The story had already reached national business news.

WESTBROOK EXECUTIVES ACCUSED OF MASSIVE FAMILY FRAUD

Karen did not attend.

She refused to turn Elena’s pain into a public performance.

Instead, she drove north with Margaret and Lily toward the Westbrook lake house.

Lily sat in the back seat holding the repaired stuffed rabbit.

“You said I wouldn’t have to help anymore,” she said.

“You don’t,” Karen replied.

“Then why am I coming?”

“Because I will not leave you in a house filled with investigators and reporters.”

Lily watched the trees through the window.

“Is Uncle Daniel bad?”

Karen considered the question.

“He made terrible choices.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No. He betrayed us.”

“Did he ever love us?”

Karen tightened her hands around the steering wheel.

“I believe he did once.”

“Can someone love you and still hurt you?”

Margaret looked toward Karen.

Karen answered carefully.

“Yes. But love does not excuse harm.”

The lake house appeared at the end of a private road.

It was a large wooden structure overlooking dark blue water. Arthur had used it as a retreat whenever the company became too demanding.

The front door was locked.

Karen used her key.

Inside, the air was cold.

Dust covered the furniture.

Yet a fresh set of footprints crossed the floor.

Margaret crouched.

“Someone was here recently.”

Karen followed the prints to Arthur’s study.

The door stood open.

His desk had been searched.

Drawers remained on the floor.

The wall safe was empty.

Lily pointed toward the fireplace.

“Grandma.”

A photograph had fallen behind the iron screen.

Karen retrieved it.

The image showed Arthur standing beside Daniel and another man whose face had been torn away.

On the back, Arthur had written:

Northstar begins with three. It ends when one remains.

Margaret examined the photograph.

“When was this taken?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Daniel would have been working in acquisitions.”

Karen looked at the missing face.

“The third man was deliberately removed.”

Lily walked toward the desk.

A small red light blinked beneath it.

“There’s something there.”

Margaret pulled out a modern surveillance device.

“This was installed within the last month.”

Karen’s face hardened.

“Whoever searched the house expected someone to return.”

Lily touched the compass symbol carved into the desk.

“It matches the book.”

Karen pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a single cassette tape and an envelope addressed to Karen.

The handwriting belonged to Arthur.

Karen opened the envelope.

My dearest Karen,

If you are reading this, Daniel has made his choice.

Do not assume he chose alone.

Trust the child who notices what adults ignore.

The cassette contains the first answer.

The second answer is beneath the company you built.

The third is buried beneath my name.

Karen read the message twice.

Lily pointed toward the cassette.

“Can we play it?”

Margaret found an old tape player in the cabinet.

Karen inserted the cassette.

Static filled the room.

Then Arthur’s voice spoke.

“Northstar recording one. Daniel has agreed to help identify the person attempting to gain control of Westbrook Holdings.”

Karen stared at the machine.

Arthur continued.

“He believes the threat comes from outside the family. I am no longer certain.”

A second voice entered the recording.

Daniel.

“What happens if Karen discovers this?”

“She cannot know yet.”

“You’re asking me to betray her trust.”

“I am asking you to protect her life.”

The tape clicked.

Then another voice spoke in the background.

It was faint, but Lily moved closer.

“I know that voice,” she whispered.

Karen looked at her.

“Whose is it?”

Lily listened again.

Her face became confused.

“It sounds like Grandpa Arthur.”

Karen shook her head.

“The first voice is Arthur.”

Lily pointed toward the speaker.

“No. The other one.”

Karen replayed the final seconds.

A man in the background said, “The girl will eventually inherit everything.”

The voice was almost identical to Arthur’s.

Almost.

Margaret looked at Karen.

“Did Arthur have a brother?”

Karen’s blood turned cold.

Arthur had a younger brother.

A brother the family had not spoken about in thirty years.

A brother everyone believed had died before Elena was born.
