Chapter 9 - The Trial
The trial began six months later.
Clara entered the courtroom carrying baby Sophie in her arms.
The sight of them silenced everyone.
Marcus stared at the table in front of him. Helena wept openly. Dr. Crane, who had already pleaded guilty, testified against them.
The prosecution presented the security recording, the financial documents, Naomi’s photograph and the messages recovered from Marcus’s phone.
Daniel testified about the closed coffin, the moving fabric and the moment he felt Clara’s pulse.
Then Clara took the stand.
“My brother did not see me as a person,” she said. “He saw me as an obstacle between himself and money. My mother knew what he was becoming, but she protected him until protecting him required sacrificing me.”
Marcus was convicted of attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy and financial crimes.
Dr. Crane lost his medical license and received a prison sentence for his role.
Helena pleaded guilty to conspiracy and falsifying records. Because she had cooperated after the chapel, her sentence was shorter than Marcus’s, but Clara did not ask the court for mercy.
When the judge offered her a chance to speak before sentencing, Clara stood.
“Forgiveness may come one day,” she said. “But forgiveness is not the same as removing consequences.”
