Chapter 8 - The Confession
Helena requested to speak with Clara.
Daniel wanted to refuse, but Clara agreed after Officer Ortiz promised that the conversation would be recorded and supervised.
Helena entered the hospital room without makeup or jewelry. She looked smaller than she had in the chapel.
“I never wanted you to die,” she began.
Clara’s expression remained cold.
“You signed papers saying I was dead.”
“Marcus said the drug would make you appear unconscious. We planned to declare you medically incapacitated, transfer control of the trust and place you in private care.”
“And the cremation?”
Helena looked away.
“That was Marcus’s decision after Daniel began asking questions.”
Daniel felt anger rise in his chest, but Clara squeezed his hand.
“Why did you let him do this?” she asked.
Helena began crying.
“Because Marcus told me the estate would collapse if you discovered the missing money. He said the family name would be destroyed.”
“So you chose the family name over your daughter.”
Helena did not answer.
The silence was answer enough.
Marcus continued denying responsibility until detectives found messages on his phone ordering Crane to increase the dose and accelerate the cremation.
Crane confessed in exchange for consideration from prosecutors. He admitted that he had falsified medical records, accepted money from Marcus and knowingly allowed Clara to be transported while alive.
