Chapter 4 - THE EMPTY TABLE

The ambulance raced toward St. Catherine’s Medical Center with its siren cutting through the quiet countryside.
Claire lay on her side while a paramedic monitored the baby’s heartbeat.
“Heart rate is elevated,” he said.
“Is my baby all right?”
“We are watching closely.”
Another contraction came.
Claire cried out and gripped the rail.
Mara sat across from her, speaking into a secure phone.
“Vale left through the catering corridor. Search the estate, the parking areas, and all service roads.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“He won’t leave without the ledger.”
“Tell me what you know.”
“Three nights ago, someone put an envelope beneath my hotel room door.”
“At the vineyard?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“I thought it was another threat.”
Mara leaned forward.
“Another?”
Claire looked toward the paramedic.
Mara understood.
She lowered her voice.
“How many threats have you received?”
“Four.”
“What kind?”
“Photographs of me. Photographs of the baby’s room. A copy of my medical schedule.”
Mara’s expression became severe.
“You were instructed to report all contact.”
“I knew you would remove me from the house.”
“That was the purpose.”
“I wasn’t ready.”
“For what?”
“To admit my marriage was over.”
Claire turned her face toward the ambulance window.
Vineyards blurred past.
“The envelope contained a key and a note,” she continued. “It said the truth was waiting in the old wine cellar.”
“At the Bennett estate?”
“At this vineyard. The family has used the property for private meetings for years.”
“What did you find?”
“A metal box hidden behind a false panel. Inside was a handwritten ledger from a clinic called North River.”
Mara’s jaw tightened.
North River Clinic had appeared in the investigation repeatedly, but no official registration existed. Payments connected to the clinic had been routed through charitable organizations and medical consulting firms.
“What was written in it?”
“Patient numbers. Procedures. Payments. Some names.”
“Whose names?”
“Judges. Senators. Business owners.”
“And the Bennett family?”
Claire hesitated.
“Vanessa.”
Mara stared at her.
“The bride?”
“Her name appeared beside a procedure from nine years ago.”
“What procedure?”
Claire whispered the words.
The paramedic looked away, pretending not to hear.
Mara’s face changed.
“Are you certain?”
“It was written beside her full name.”
“Who else saw the ledger?”
“Evan.”
The ambulance seemed to become very quiet.
“You showed him?”
“He found me in the cellar.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
“What did he do?”
“He begged me to give it to him. He said Vanessa’s life would be destroyed.”
“Did you?”
“No. I photographed every page and returned the ledger to the box.”
“And this morning?”
“The box was empty.”
Mara leaned back.
“Evan told Richard.”
“I think so.”
“Why would Richard bring the ledger to the wedding?”
“To give it to Victoria. Or destroy it in front of her.”
“Did you see him carrying anything?”
“A brown leather case.”
Mara immediately called the agents at the estate.
“Search for a brown leather case belonging to Richard Vale. Check the security recordings and every guest vehicle.”
The ambulance turned sharply.
Claire moaned.
The paramedic examined the monitor.
“We need to increase speed.”
“What’s wrong?” Mara asked.
“The baby’s heart rate just dropped.”
At the vineyard, the reception hall had become a controlled crime scene.
Agents stood at every exit.
Guests were ordered to remain at their tables until their identities were recorded.
The white roses and crystal decorations now looked absurd beneath the harsh glare of portable evidence lights.
Victoria sat at the front table with Charles and Vanessa.
The bride’s veil had been removed. Her mascara had begun to run.
“You ruined my wedding,” Vanessa whispered.
Victoria looked at her daughter.
“I protected your wedding.”
“Claire was in labor.”
“She planned this.”
“She planned for her water to break?”
“She planned the agents.”
Vanessa looked across the hall at Evan.
He sat alone at a table near the windows while an agent questioned him.
“You knew she was a witness,” Victoria said.
Evan did not look up.
“Answer me.”
An agent stepped between them.
“Mrs. Bennett, return to your seat.”
Victoria ignored him.
“What did you tell Richard?”
Evan finally met her gaze.
“I asked whether Claire could be prosecuted for stealing family records.”
Vanessa approached.
“What records?”
No one answered.
She looked from her mother to her brother.
“What records?”
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“This is not the time.”
“My wedding has been shut down by federal agents. My pregnant sister-in-law was taken away in an ambulance. Richard disappeared. I think this is exactly the time.”
Evan stood.
“Vanessa, there’s something you need to know.”
Victoria slapped him.
The sound cracked across the silent reception hall.
Dozens of guests turned.
One agent moved immediately.
Victoria lifted both hands.
“A family disagreement.”
Evan touched his cheek.
Then he laughed once, bitterly.
“You always do that when someone gets close to the truth.”
“Be quiet.”
“The clinic kept a ledger.”
Vanessa’s face went blank.
“What clinic?”
Victoria grabbed Evan’s arm.
He pulled free.
“North River.”
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Charles rose from his chair.
“Evan, stop.”
But Vanessa was staring at her mother.
“No.”
Victoria took one step toward her.
“Darling, listen to me.”
“No one knows that name.”
“Vanessa.”
“No one except you, Father, Richard, and me.”
The agents in the room became very still.
Mara’s deputy approached Vanessa.
“What is North River Clinic?”
Victoria answered quickly.
“A private wellness facility that closed years ago.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. It was where they took me after the accident.”
Charles closed his eyes.
Evan stared at his sister.
“What accident?”
Vanessa’s hands began trembling.
“The one they erased.”
Before anyone could ask another question, an agent shouted from the far side of the room.
“We found Vale’s table.”
The guests moved aside.
Richard’s place setting was untouched.
Beneath his chair lay a brown leather case.
An agent opened it carefully.
Inside was no ledger.
Only a wedding photograph taken less than an hour earlier.
Someone had drawn a red circle around Claire’s stomach.
