Chapter 3 - THE CONVOY AT THE GATES

The first security vehicle reached the vineyard’s main gate twelve minutes after Claire made the call.

The estate guards refused to open it.

Agent Mara sat in the lead vehicle, watching through the windshield as two men in black uniforms stepped from the gatehouse.

One raised a hand.

“Private event,” he called.

Mara lowered the window and displayed her credentials.

“Federal law enforcement. Open the gate.”

The guard stared at the identification, then touched his earpiece.

“We were not informed of any federal attendance.”

“You are being informed now.”

“I need authorization from the property manager.”

Mara’s expression hardened.

“Inside that building is a protected witness experiencing a medical emergency. You have five seconds to open this gate before we remove it.”

The second guard reached toward his belt.

The agents in the vehicles behind Mara opened their doors.

The guard froze.

The iron gates slowly separated.

Mara’s convoy accelerated up the gravel drive.

At the reception hall, guests were applauding while Vanessa’s father, Charles Bennett, stood onstage with a champagne glass.

“My daughter has always known exactly what she wants,” he said into the microphone. “And today she has found a man worthy of standing beside her.”

Claire’s screams could not be heard over the applause.

Evan stood near the stage, shifting anxiously.

Victoria watched him from the front table.

Do not move, her eyes warned.

Richard Vale leaned close to her.

“What happened to Claire?”

“An unfortunate performance.”

“Is she using the pregnancy?”

“She claims she’s in labor.”

Richard’s face changed.

“Where is her purse?”

Victoria looked at him.

“What?”

“Did she have her purse with her?”

“Yes.”

Richard placed his glass on the table.

“You need to get it.”

“Why?”

“Because Evan told me she might have copied financial documents.”

Victoria’s smile vanished.

“You said she had no evidence.”

“I said she had nothing admissible.”

“That is not the same thing.”

The sound of engines reached the terrace.

Guests near the windows turned.

Black vehicles swept around the fountain and stopped outside the main entrance.

Charles continued speaking, unaware.

“She has inherited her mother’s strength, her mother’s determination, and perhaps her mother’s occasional stubbornness.”

Polite laughter spread through the room.

Then six agents entered through the double doors.

Behind them came paramedics carrying emergency equipment.

The laughter died.

Mara stepped forward.

“Where is Claire Bennett?”

No one answered.

The guests looked toward Victoria.

Charles lowered the microphone.

“This is a private ceremony.”

Mara displayed a court order.

“We are here for Claire Bennett.”

Richard rose from his seat.

“I am the family’s attorney. You will speak to me before approaching any member of this household.”

“Then you can begin by telling me why Mrs. Bennett has been locked inside a bathroom during premature labor.”

A wave of shock swept through the hall.

Vanessa stared at her mother.

“You locked her in?”

Victoria stood gracefully.

“There has been a misunderstanding. Claire became emotional, and we gave her a private place to recover.”

Mara looked at the paramedics.

“Find her.”

Evan stepped forward.

“I can take you.”

Victoria seized his wrist.

“No.”

Every nearby guest saw it.

Evan looked down at his mother’s hand.

Something inside him appeared to break.

“She’s in the west hallway,” he said. “The bathroom near the library.”

Mara and the paramedics moved immediately.

Victoria followed.

Richard caught her arm.

“If Claire has that phone, assume the call was recorded.”

“What phone?”

“The one issued by witness protection.”

Victoria stopped walking.

For the first time that day, she understood the scale of the danger.

Claire was not merely cooperating with investigators.

She had been placed under federal protection.

“Why wasn’t I told?” Victoria whispered.

“Because Evan only confessed this morning.”

Victoria looked across the room at her son.

Evan had gone pale.

She released Richard and followed the agents into the hallway.

When Mara opened the bathroom door, Claire was bent over the vanity, fighting to remain upright.

The paramedics rushed inside.

Mara stepped between Claire and the Bennett family.

“Step away from her.”

Victoria tried to recover her authority.

“You cannot enter private property like this.”

“We can when the woman you imprisoned is a protected federal witness.”

The guests crowded behind them.

Phones appeared in raised hands.

Victoria saw cameras recording her from every direction.

She lowered her voice.

“This accusation is outrageous.”

Mara turned to one of the agents.

“Secure the hallway. No one leaves the estate.”

A murmur of alarm spread through the crowd.

Richard stepped forward.

“On what legal basis?”

“Obstruction of a federal investigation. Unlawful confinement. Witness intimidation. Evidence tampering.”

“You have no evidence of any of those things.”

Mara held up Claire’s emergency phone.

“The device records automatically.”

Richard said nothing.

Claire was placed on a stretcher.

Evan tried to approach.

“Claire, I’m going with you.”

She looked at him.

The pain in her face was deeper than the contractions.

“You left me behind a locked door.”

“I was coming back.”

“You chose a speech.”

“I made a mistake.”

“No,” Claire whispered. “You made a decision.”

The paramedics began moving her toward the entrance.

Evan followed until Mara blocked him.

“She does not want you near her.”

“I’m her husband.”

“You may also be a material witness.”

Victoria’s voice cut through the hallway.

“Evan, say nothing else.”

Claire turned her head on the stretcher.

“Still listening to your mother?”

Evan’s shoulders dropped.

The paramedics carried her outside.

As they loaded her into the ambulance, Claire gripped Mara’s sleeve.

“My documents.”

“They’re safe.”

“No. The original ledger.”

Mara leaned closer.

“What ledger?”

Claire struggled to breathe.

“The one from the clinic.”

“You never told me you had an original ledger.”

“I didn’t have it before.”

“Where is it?”

Claire looked past Mara.

Richard Vale stood in the doorway, watching them.

“He brought it to the wedding.”

Mara’s eyes followed Claire’s gaze.

Richard immediately stepped back into the hall.

Mara turned to another agent.

May you like

“Stop him.”

But when the agents returned to the reception room, Richard Vale was already gone.
