THE WOMAN IN THE CLOSET / Chapter 25 / 25

Chapter 25 - The Woman With My Face

The recording ended before Elise could answer.

Agent Ruiz’s team opened the locked staircase from above, but the woman was gone.

Only one person appeared on the tower’s external cameras.

She wore a dark coat and kept her face turned away.

In her hands was a metal box marked 319.

Elise insisted the voice belonged to the woman who raised her during her first five years.

Julian had told her that woman was a nurse.

Later, he claimed she died.

Her name was Helen Ward.

The same name appeared on my hospital delivery records.

Helen had certified the death of Margaret’s second child.

She had also signed Elise’s transfer to Julian’s clinic.

Helen was not simply a nurse.

She was the person who separated us.

Before we could locate her, my contractions began.

At first, I thought fear had caused another false alarm.

Then Dr. Leonard looked at me and called the hospital.

My daughter was born nine hours later.

Healthy.

Safe.

I named her Lily Nathaniel Harcourt.

Not Vale.

Damon remained in custody after returning voluntarily with Agent Ruiz. He claimed he had escaped only because Julian intended to silence him.

Patricia entered negotiations with prosecutors.

Samuel surrendered his legal license and agreed to testify.

Julian Cross resigned from the Harcourt board but disappeared before investigators could seize his private records.

Elise and Rose remained with Rebecca under federal protection.

Claire stayed near my hospital room.

We were three sisters, connected by blood and divided by decades of carefully constructed lies.

For six days, nothing happened.

On the seventh morning, a package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was Box 319.

The lock had already been opened.

The DNA results were missing.

Only Nathaniel’s second envelope remained.

I broke the seal.

My dearest daughter,

Names can be stolen more easily than blood, but blood does not decide who deserves love, loyalty or inheritance.

Margaret raised one child believing she was Evelyn.

Julian raised another child believing she was Elise.

Helen Ward changed the records so completely that even I could not be certain which identity belonged to which baby.

But the truth is not contained in the DNA report.

The truth is contained in what Julian feared enough to hide.

The daughter Margaret brought home was registered under another family’s name before she was registered as mine.

I turned to the next page.

It was blank.

Someone had removed the final part of the letter.

A knock sounded at the hospital door.

Claire entered first.

Behind her stood my mother, Elise, Rebecca and Agent Ruiz.

None of them had knocked.

The sound came again.

From the private closet beside the window.

Everyone became still.

Agent Ruiz moved toward it.

The door opened before he reached the handle.

A woman stepped out.

She was approximately my age.

Dark hair.

Blue-gray eyes.

My height.

My face.

Not similar.

Identical.

She carried the missing DNA report in one hand and the original Evelyn hospital bracelet in the other.

Elise stared at her.

“Who are you?”

The woman ignored her.

She looked directly at me and smiled.

“My name is Evelyn Harcourt.”

The baby moved quietly in my arms.

I could not speak.

The woman placed the report on the table.

“Before you call security, ask Margaret one question.”

My mother began shaking.

The stranger continued.

“Ask her which baby she chose when Helen Ward told her only one of us could leave the hospital.”

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

The woman with my face moved closer.

Then she whispered the words that opened another secret none of us had expected.

“You were not the sister who survived.”

May you like

She looked down at Lily.

“And your daughter is not the child Julian Cross is coming back for.”
