THE WOMAN IN THE CLOSET / Chapter 21 / 25

Chapter 21 - The Heir Julian Chose

The hidden chamber was not a room.

It was part of an old freight elevator built inside the tower’s foundation.

Julian had activated it remotely.

As we rose, Patricia handed Volume Two to Agent Ruiz.

“Why help us now?” Claire asked.

“Because Julian made the same mistake Damon did.”

“What mistake?”

“He believed I would accept being removed from my own plan.”

The chamber stopped behind the boardroom wall.

Through the monitor, we watched Julian begin his announcement.

“For years,” he told the reporters, “Harcourt Development has concealed the existence of Nathaniel Harcourt’s biological descendant.”

Rose sat silently.

Elise stood behind her.

She was a dark-haired woman in her early thirties. She kept one hand on Rose’s shoulder, but her attention moved constantly toward the exits.

“She is afraid,” Rebecca said.

Patricia pressed a switch.

The wall opened.

Every camera turned toward us.

Julian stopped speaking.

I entered the boardroom first.

“Rose is not a corporate announcement.”

Reporters began shouting questions.

Julian remained composed.

“She is the legitimate descendant your family erased.”

“She is also a child whose identity you forged.”

Elise stepped forward.

“I agreed to the certificate.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian said Rose would inherit what Nathaniel stole from Daniel.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“Do not discuss private matters.”

Elise looked at him.

“You said Evelyn knew.”

“I did not know you existed,” I said.

Rose moved closer to her mother.

I asked the cameras to be turned off.

Julian refused.

He needed the public scene.

So I changed it.

I placed both volumes of the Continuity Ledger on the table.

“These records document illegal property transfers involving former Harcourt executives, judges and private investors. Julian Cross has spent years trying to control them.”

Agent Ruiz announced that the ledgers were being taken as evidence.

Julian smiled.

“Two incomplete books prove nothing.”

Patricia entered.

“They prove enough when combined with my testimony.”

The room erupted.

Julian’s calm finally broke.

“You will go to prison.”

“So will you.”

Elise took Rose’s hand and moved toward Rebecca.

Julian reached for the child’s other arm, but security stepped between them.

Rose looked up at me.

“The lady in the closet said you would come.”

My body went still.

“What lady?”

“At the school. Before Mommy arrived.”

Elise stared at her daughter.

“No one else spoke to you.”

Rose nodded.

“She was hiding where the coats were kept.”

The coat closet.

“Did she tell you her name?”

“No.”

Rose reached into her pocket.

“She told me to give you this.”

A small silver key rested in her palm.

The number 318 was engraved on one side.

HBC appeared on the other.

A second Hawthorne Bank key.

Rose closed my fingers around it.

“She said the first box was for your father.”

May you like

The child looked toward the boardroom doors.

“The second one is for your sister.”
