Chapter 14 - The Child Named in the Ledger

Anthony told us not to touch the black ledger.
I opened it anyway.
For too long, men had hidden information in the name of protecting me.
My father.
Samuel.
Damon.
Now Anthony.
Every secret had created another weapon for someone else to use.
The first pages listed property transfers dating back more than forty years. Most of the names had been replaced with identification codes, but the signatures beside them were real.
Judges.
Bank executives.
Trust officers.
Several former Harcourt directors.
Agent Ruiz photographed each page.
“This could reopen hundreds of cases,” he said.
“It could also destroy Harcourt Development,” Claire replied.
“Then Harcourt will answer for what it did,” I said.
Anthony studied me.
“That is what Nathaniel said before Patricia threatened you.”
“And hiding the truth worked so well?”
He did not answer.
Near the center of the ledger, the records changed.
Property transactions became trust schedules.
I found my own name.
EVELYN HARCOURT VALE
PRIMARY CONTINUITY BENEFICIARY
Beneath it was a second entry.
ROSE EVELYN VALE
CONTINGENT BENEFICIARY
The date beside Rose’s name was three years earlier.
My daughter had not yet been born.
I had never known anyone named Rose Vale.
“Is this another company?” I asked.
Agent Ruiz read the page.
“It appears to be a person. There is a recorded date of birth.”
My throat tightened.
The date indicated that Rose was three years old.
Claire looked at me.
“Could Damon have registered a child?”
“Not under my name.”
Anthony moved closer.
“What does the parentage section say?”
I turned the page.
MOTHER: EVELYN HARCOURT VALE
FATHER: DAMON CHRISTOPHER VALE
The room became cold.
“That is impossible.”
Agent Ruiz examined the seal.
“It carries a state registration number.”
“It is false.”
“Most likely. But it was accepted by the trust.”
A photograph had been attached to the next page.
It showed a little girl standing in a garden. Her dark hair fell to her shoulders. Around one wrist was a silver bracelet engraved with the Harcourt crest.
I recognized the garden.
It belonged to Patricia’s Mercer Recovery Foundation.
Claire touched the edge of the photograph.
“I’ve seen her.”
“When?”
“Two years ago. Patricia told me she was the daughter of a foundation employee.”
“What was her name?”
“She called her Rosie.”
My hands began shaking.
Damon had used my medical records.
My signatures.
My legal identity.
Had he also created a child in my name?
Agent Ruiz turned to the final trust page.
A blank space appeared beside the words CONTINUITY TRUSTEE.
The original name had been removed.
Anthony held the page beneath the light.
Indented letters became visible in the paper.
Three initials.
J. C.
Anthony stepped back.
“No.”
“Who is it?” I asked.
Before he could answer, the archive speaker activated again.
This time the voice belonged to Damon.
“Evelyn,” he said, “Rose is not a false entry.”
The sound was a recording, but it had been made recently.
“She is real.”
May you like
A pause followed.
“And Patricia planned to make her your replacement.”
