THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - Emily’s Last Message

Emily looked exhausted in the recording.

Her hair was tied back, and shadows rested beneath her eyes. Behind her was a concrete wall Daniel did not recognize.

She leaned closer to the camera.

“I wanted to tell you everything, but I could not risk bringing you into this before I understood how deep it went.”

Daniel stood motionless in the hidden room.

The deletion program continued destroying files, but the technician had managed to isolate Emily’s message.

Her voice trembled.

“The Hale Foundation is not only stealing donor money. It is moving funds for people who pay my mother for access, protection, and influence. Judges, officials, executives, police officers. Anyone who can be bought.”

Detective Quinn exchanged a look with one of the officers.

Emily continued.

“My father discovered the transfers before he died. His stroke was not natural. I found medication in his room that was never prescribed to him.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Harold Hale had not died from illness.

Another death had been hidden beneath a respectable explanation.

“I copied the financial records,” Emily said. “But there is a second archive. My father called it the Black Ledger. It contains names, payments, recordings, and proof of every arrangement Victoria made.”

Emily looked toward something beyond the camera.

“I do not know where it is. I believe he hid clues in the trust documents.”

Daniel whispered, “The trust.”

The Hale family trust controlled the estate, the foundation, and several investment companies.

After Emily’s death, Victoria had refused to let Daniel see the full terms.

She claimed only direct Hale descendants had access.

Lily was now the last direct descendant.

Emily’s voice became softer.

“If something happens to me, protect Lily. My mother will try to control her because the trust changes when Lily turns nine.”

Daniel looked at Detective Quinn.

Lily’s ninth birthday was six weeks away.

“Do not trust Marcus Vale,” Emily continued. “And do not trust anyone who says they are helping you recover from my death.”

The video flickered.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I am sorry I kept this from you. I thought silence would protect you. I was wrong.”

She reached toward the camera.

“I love you. Tell Lily I loved her every second.”

The video ended.

Daniel stood in silence.

The technician spoke first.

“The deletion stopped.”

“How much did we lose?” Quinn asked.

“Most of the financial directories. Some camera archives remain, but the remote user targeted specific folders.”

“Can you trace the source?”

“I’m trying.”

Daniel looked at the blank screen.

“Emily said the trust changes when Lily turns nine.”

Detective Quinn nodded.

“That gives Victoria a motive for taking custody.”

“But why now?”

“Because someone else may gain control when Lily reaches that age.”

The technician called Quinn over.

“I traced the deletion signal.”

“Where?”

“Not far.”

A map appeared.

The signal originated from a building in the city’s financial district.

The address belonged to Vale and Mercer, Marcus Vale’s law firm.

Quinn immediately contacted another team.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

YOU WERE WARNED TO STOP LOOKING.

Beneath it was a photograph.

Lily lay sleeping in her hospital bed.

The image had been taken from inside the room.

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

He called the officer stationed outside Lily’s room.

No answer.

He called the hospital.

A nurse picked up.

“This is Daniel Bennett. Check my daughter’s room immediately.”

There was a pause.

Then distant shouting.

The nurse returned.

“Mr. Bennett, Lily is safe, but the officer outside her room is unconscious.”

Daniel ran toward the library door.

Detective Quinn followed.

“How did someone get in?”

“A man dressed as a hospital technician entered to inspect the oxygen line.”

“Did he touch Lily?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel and Quinn drove back to the hospital under police escort.

When they arrived, the hallway was crowded with officers.

The unconscious guard had been taken for treatment. A sedative dart had been found beneath his collar.

Lily was awake and frightened.

Daniel rushed to her.

“Did he hurt you?”

She shook her head.

“He asked where Mom hid the silver key.”

“What silver key?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you tell him anything?”

“No.”

Detective Quinn inspected the room.

The intruder had opened drawers, searched Lily’s backpack, and removed the lining from her stuffed fox.

“He was looking for something,” Quinn said.

Lily reached beneath the blanket.

“He dropped this.”

In her palm was a black cuff link engraved with a small letter M.

Daniel recognized it.

Marcus Vale wore an identical pair at every formal event.

But Quinn did not appear convinced.

“This may be evidence,” she said. “Or it may have been left intentionally.”

“To frame him?”

“Possibly.”

A hospital administrator entered with security footage.

The intruder’s face was partly hidden by a mask, but his height and posture were clear.

Daniel watched the man leave Lily’s room and disappear into a stairwell.

Just before entering the stairwell, the man turned.

On his wrist was a distinctive tattoo.

A black circle divided by a silver line.

Daniel had seen the symbol before.

Not on Marcus.

On the chauffeur who had offered him a ride.

Detective Quinn enlarged the image.

“What does that symbol mean?”

Daniel remembered an old photograph in Victoria’s house.

Harold Hale stood with several men at a private charity dinner.

Each man wore a pin bearing the same divided circle.

“I think it belonged to my father-in-law’s private society.”

“What society?”

“Emily called it the Meridian Circle.”

Lily suddenly sat upright.

“The man said that name.”

Daniel turned to her.

“When?”

“He thought I was asleep. He talked on the phone.”

“What did he say?”

May you like

Lily swallowed.

“He said, ‘The Meridian child doesn’t have the key.’”
